clockwise. As usual, the Superstitions continue to amaze me. Each mountain is
unique and beautiful. I really enjoyed hiking back in to the Superstitions on
this trail. I thought the trip would be over before it began when my Dog Spud
encountered a Cholla cactus. I noticed he was limping and saw one sticking off
his rear left paw. Thank goodness I had my Leatherman! Never go in the
backcountry without it. Anyhow, that one came out fine when I noticed a LARGE
one on his front paw. Well, it must have really hurt because my sweet dog
started growling at ME!. In the end I had to wrap my shirt around his face and
tie it on with his leash, basically lay on top of him and have my way with that
damn cholla. It must of been a funny site, ha. Chick with gun wrestling pit
bull. Thankfully the first folks I saw was after this little event when I was
walking along casually like nothing was going on.
Ok, enough of that story, back to the hike. The saguaro forest on the trail was
so beautiful and
in the early morning light they seem to glow. Only to then come upon the
Cholla forest which truly was glowing. Tip toe through the Cholla. Spud showed
remarkable learning ability as he kept strictly to the trail, I was very
impressed. Only one more cholla in the lip which came out easily. As the trail
descended in to Boulder Basin the views were magnificent. A bit of panic set in
when I had a bit of trouble locating the Dutchman Trail which I found quite
easily and then berated myself for panicking. And then, I stumbled upon the
first Rattler I've ever walked up on. He was laying across the trail, then
coiled up rattled at me and then took off. Darn, I had already put up my camera
and barely got it out in time for one picture of him taking off. Now a little
paranoid at knowing how easily I could step on one before I knew it, I kept
walking keeping my eye on the trail more than the vistas. We did use every bit of our water and could easily have used another 50
oz's or so. It was around 85 degrees. All in all a great trail I highly
recommend! |
