We started at 6:40 a.m. on the South Kaibab trail, connected to the Tonto trail, the back to the South Rim on the Bright Angel trail. After numerous stops along the way the hike consisted of 14 miles, and took us 9 hours. Other than almost hitting a heard of elk just outside of the Canyon the trip was perfectly normal and smooth. At the top of the Bright Angel trail there was some snow and ice remaining from a long winter here. With it being free admission day to the Canyon it was packed with tourists. The weather was perfect, sunny, and barely a breeze. The temps ranged from a low temp of 29 at 6:30 a.m. and reached 85 at 1:25 pm. The Colorado River had the consistency of chocolate milk.

Breaking away from the crowds hiking Mt. Elden I decided to hike O'Leary. Encountered only 4 other hikers. As usual very cool scenery at the summit. A bit buggy, but not too terrible.

Hot Loop to Woods Canyon trail. Lots of fresh, cold water following in Woods Canyon. I haven't hiked WC trail in many years and noticed many small rock slides on the trail. Hot Loop trail a bit muddy and therefore slippery.

Hiked the Rocky Ridge trail to Dry Lakes, then on to the Schultz Pass trail. Many mountain bikers on Schultz Pass, and trail work being completed between Dry Lakes and Schultz Pass.

Shuttle bus to Kaibab trail was packed. Got off bus and immediately took off on the South Kaibab trail. Took 2 hrs. 10 min. to reach the Tonto trail. Very quiet on the Tonto, and the cottonwood trees on the trail were in beautiful fall colors. Just under 2 hrs. hiking the Tonto I ended up at Indian Gardens with more cottonwoods in bright green. Hiked out on the Bright Angel trail in 2 hrs. 20 mins.

Windy and cloudy day. It had rained the day before so the normally dry streams were flowing.

Another heart-pumping hike to the fire tower on a humid and hot Sunday. Barely a breeze until the summit was reached. As usual the views were incredible. Trail in great shape considering some rather strong monsoon storms this summer.

Took a group of friends on the Bright Angel trail. Over half of the group had never hiked below the rim. Took about 2 hrs. 20 min. to reach Indian Gardens. The cottonwood trees were in bloom, and little cotton looking pieces were floating in the air. After a brief rest we hiked out to Plateau Point. The water level was low, and very green in color. Weather and temp. were perfect for this 12.2 mi. day hike.

I knew there would be some snow on the ground, but there was a lot at first. Even driving to the trailhead required 4-wheel drive. The trail was wet and dry in spots. Made it 1/2 mile from the summit. Interesting contrast between the white snow and black lava rock.

Crowded trail on Oct. 7. Many hikers checking out the fall colors. The wind was brisk, but the sun felt great. Started out at the SnowBowl end, then proceeded to the Weatherford trailhead, then partially into the Weatherford Canyon.

Hiked Bright Angel trail to Plateau Point on a frosty and cold morning. It took 2 hours to Indian Gardens, then 45 minutes to Plateau point. Saw few hikers coming down the trail with us, but many small groups of students where hiking down as we were hiking back up to the rim.

Back to the Girtner trail for me, on a beautiful and warm November day. Little foot traffic, but a few mountain bikers. This trail has become more rocky than before. Must have been due to the heavy summer rains. All of the creeks that required crossing on my hike were totally dry this time. I also hiked all of the Twin Fences trail, crossed over Dry Creek Road and hiked what I believe is the Chimney trail, and part of the Cypress trail.

Jordan, Teacup, Chimney Rock

First Sedona hike of the season for me. I did a combination of the Jordan, Teacup, and Chimney Rock trails. Very few hikers on the trail.

Haven't hiked the Mt. Elden Lookout trail in many years, so I was due. Not many cars at the trailhead parking lot. Near the summit the aspen tree leaves had already turned to a golden yellow color. Clouds were getting darker and the winds were fierce, then a few sprinkles appeared. My goal was to make this into a loop hike, so I continued onto the Skyline trail, then Sunset, Heart, and Christmas Tree trails, finally making it back to the Elden Lookout trail. The Heart trail continues to be desolate, very rocky, but also very scenic.

The Humphrey's trail parking lot was already packed by 10 a.m. People were heading for the summit and coming down from it. Instead of traveling to the Hump. summit I detoured to the Weatherford trail. Traces of snow here and there. Reached my destination at the Fremont Saddle. Clouds blew in and the temp. dropped, but no moisture. Retracing my steps back to the parking lot the crowd of hikers was significantly less.

Loop hike of Rocky Ridge, to Brookbank, to Sunset, to Schultz Pass trail. Not as many mt. bikers on Schultz Pass trail than normally on a weekend. Great day to hike. Noticeable that autumn is in the air.

Back to hike O Leary. Warm summer-like day. No other hiker encounters, but bugs, bugs, BUGS everywhere. At the summit it was impossible to enjoy the views at the tower. The entire top was swarming with ladybugs. Along the trail there were enough flies to keep me from taking long rests.

I haven't hiked Long Canyon in over 3 years, and since the golf course development bordering the trail began. Thankfully not much of the expensive homes can be seen from the trail. It was a nice, sunny day to hit the trail. What breeze there was produced clouds of pollen blowing from the pine trees. Back into Long Canyon the damp, rich soil had a wonderful smell. Even further back I came upon many flying insects. Wonder if this is a sign of an early spring. After hiking into Long Canyon (about 3 miles) I back-tracked and hiking the Deadman Pass trail to the Boynton trailhead, then back to the Long Canyon trailhead.

Beautiful, clear Sedona day to explore the Broken Arrow to Chicken Point, then Little Horse to Mystic trail. Broken Arrow trail had a few major rock slides after the recent moisture. Also, the trail was muddy in spots.
