was going to explore a prehistoric rt.that starts at cardenas butte off the tanner tr. i was able to get a pretty good look at the beggining of the rt. from the rim at lipan pt. standing there analyzing the rt, i over analyzed and lost my nerve. the slopes from 3 miles away looked very steep and w/ all the rain and being solo... any way i decided that w/the permit i had i could go and do the escalante rt. again. all was good and i headed to moran pt. and parked my truck walking the .8 miles to the beginning of the new hance tr.when i leave the canyon on sun., off the tanner tr., ill have to hitch to my truck the 5 or 6 miles, a 50/50 propisition.so its about 11:30 by the time i hit the tr. and got down to papago beach and my first night camp by 5:30. papago slide is still very steep and no matter how many times i go up, it gets no less scary as particularly near the top.the papago wall is no big deal although i have to lower my pack to get over the lip. sat. morn i got packed up and started to head out and promptly twisted my left ankle. as i lay on the cobbles writhing in pain , the thought occured that if i could continue no farther and had to hike out ,the new hance tr. was the least milage at 9.5 miles from the beach i now lay on. and the thought of going down the papago :scared: i was going to die. but all was good i was able to hike and was soon on my way, gingerly.took the shortcut up a break in the cliff wall in 75 mile crk. next was escalante crk. and then finally up to the ridge w/ the kickbutt views both up and down the colorado, particularly of the unkar delta. took lunch. ankle was soar and didn't bother to wrap it. so i was under way again to a 2 mile traverse of some very steep slopes w/a tread boot width. have to concentrate here. no rubber necking. about half way through i twisted my left ankle AGAIN i crumpled to the ground in agony. relizing where i was i didn't writhe.thanking no one in particular that i didn't fall over like a tree, left ankle the slope is on the left. it would have been a tumbling mess, and certain death. thinking i should have stuck to my original hike plans. :? when the pain mellowed out a bit i rubbed my anle and moved it around a little and figured i could still walk on it, hopefully iwiggled out of my pack and fished out my ace bandage, wrapped, stood up and was able to continue.about 4.5 miles to tanner baech and camp. finnally got off the steep stuff and hit a nice smooth tr. and was able to move along pretty good, hope for the same tommorrow. after some good cruising i crossed cardenas crk. and shortly there after the rollercoaster section more of a pain at this point than anything. finally got to tanner beach and camp. camped in my usuall spot. sun finds my ankle slightly swollen and pretty soar. but none the less i am able to shoulder apack and getting up the tanner in a little over 6 hours. was able to get a ride after walking for about a mile. life is good :D

first time in th whitetank mnts. looked for at least an 8 mile loop and found one. read some of the posts about diffuculty in ford canyon. im here to tell you that the rt. through the canyon was very well marked and as a matter of fact all tr. junctions were well sighned w/occassional mile markers as you go along. so heres the loop i took, starting at between area 8 and 9 at oneof waddle th. i went in a clockwise direction after approx. 1/2 mile i turn right or west on the mesquite tr which starts out level for approx. 200 yds when it begins a steady climb for awhile finally the grade moderates but stiill climbs ,after1.7 miles you reach the willow tr. heading in a n.w. direction then west for about 1.6 miles still climbing steadily you finally reach the ford can. tr and have about another 1/2 mile till you reach the ridge. so total so far is about 4 miles of realitivly moderate to easy acsending. if your in ok shape you should be able to do this w/out stopping for an ok cardio workout. the tr. to this point is well maintained and easy to follow. at the ridge top you can see where the tr. gets into the wash of ford canyon this down section is not to big of a deal. you get to the wash and there is an abundanse of markers. basically just follow the canyon down to the dam and very shortly after the sighns will point you out to the right.thecanyon itself is about 2 k of walking through sand and some slick granite .watch your step on the slick rock.the climb out was definately the most rugged part of the whole loop.after a bit you pick up the waddell tr and after about a 1/2 mile your vehicle. i rate this hike as easy but could be moderate to hard depending on your capabilities . dont over estimate yourselvs my first time out here and i liked it for a nice change from the mnt. preserves that im always hiking. also recommend picking up a map at the gate

was going to hike out on the new hance tr. with my partners but there was about a foot of snow on grandveiw and unless somebody came down n.h. route finding might have been a slight problem for the snow line went down 2000 feet below the rim still about a foot deep.also hoffmaster and my yak traxs broke. so we went to hance crk and camped for the night.seen a huge bighorn on the tonto where it turns up hance crk. very impressive.uneventful trip up and out.good time as usual.

alrighty, part 2 of my adventure. after 3 days of recuperation at home i was feeling better, although my neck was still quite sore. so i decided to pick up the trip at grandview pt. and stay at hance creek which is where i should be according to my permit.
mon.,woke up to a beautiful morning.packed up ate some food and got underway. got to hance beach wher i took a break on the other side of the wash. once i got moving againi took about ten stepsand came across a grand canyon rattler, the second one i have ever seen. really cool :D he eventually headed off into the rocks and i continued on my way. my goal today was to camp on the promontory overlooking unkar delta and furnace flats to one side and the gnarly and claustrophobic granite gorge on the other.truly a very scenic camp spot. fortunately for me i timed it just right to avoid the blazing sun, for there is no shade here.
the walk to get here was nice w/ a couple of nice sporty climbs and scrambles.
tues., want to make the top of the redwall today so i can have an easy day tomorrow. the hiking was good, although i was feeling a little sluggish. got to tanner beach where i took a break under a neat overhang on the n. side of the wash out of the sun and close to the river. was starting to feel sickly again. had to force feed myself so i would have the energy to make it above the redwall. the redwall climb was grueling. my stomach felt like i had a huge warm rock sitting in the pit of it. it was sucking the energy right out of me. i felt worse than i did in part 1.
wends., hardly slept at all last night.my stomach wasn't right. i felt like total crap. forced down a little food and slowly headed on to what was supposed to be an easy day. took a leghnthy break at 75 mile saddle to force feed myself. when i got going again i found myself taking breaks continuously up the last 2 miles, go 50 yards hit some shade rest for awhile head for the next shade. this went on for what seemed to be forever. 6 hours and 4 miles later i was at the top. what a relief. my water also ran out at the top, but that was ok, because i was going to hitch a ride and be back at my truck in no time, or so i thought. i ended up walking another 9 miles and 3 hours w/ no water :?: before a ranger heading to work picked me up and brought me the rest of the way. :) but wait i'm not done yet. seems i left my lights on and needed a jump. my battery jumper didn't have the power and i had no cables, so it took me an additional hour before a german couple w/cables gave me a jump. by now i had reinjured my neck and my satomach was awful. what an experience this trip has been. but i'm still happy i went on the trip even w/the negative experiences.
also while on these trips i have been getting early morning visits from humming birds i have a bright red bivy which attracts them like flies to ..... they would head right to my face which poked out my hood sometimes so close that if i took a deep breath i wouldn't need breakfast that morning. the whole thing w/the hummers was really cool.
so i finally went to the doctors and was told i had a severly sprained neck, and giardia from drinking a couple of quarts of unfiltered water in part 1. giaRDIA IS AN AWFUL INFECTION.   to this day 7/9/06 my neck is still soar and the giardia is stiill lingering. lesson learned here is no matter the weight savings which is small i'll have iodine for a backup. after all this i can't wait to go back.the grand canyon is awesome. :)

part 1 my itinerary for this trip was supposed to be 12 days and 136 miles, going from s. bass t.h. to lipan pt.,solo. was going to be my big bang for the year, and i was very much looking foward to it. but things didn't work out as planned. i had been feeling funky for a couple of days before the trip and chalked it up to pre hike jitters. left for g.c. at 4 am sat. morn and was at the t.h. by 10. got a prearranged ride from the back country office where i left my truck. the rd. is 28 miles of dirt which can be driven by passenger car if you are careful.don't try in rain and the last mile or so you will need high clearance.set off downthe tr. :D the tr. was in great shape and the going was good all the way to the beach. there was a very steep ravine that had to be negotiated to get to the beach, once domn to the river i took a much needed break and admired the view. wasn't very happy w/ the windy conditions which was getting sand everywhere. but because i wasn't feeling very well i made the best of it. i had set up a cache the weekend before at s. kaibab tonto junction. had everything needed in a ratsack under a pile of rocks. also had a ratsack w/me. that night i left the sack sitting on the beach a few feet away from my head, and when i awoke the next day there were animal tracks all around but the contents of the sack were untouched. what a great product. sun. day 2. not feeling very good this morn.i was supposed to backtrack to elves chasm and camp at s. bass area the next day. but feeling worse today i decided to continue foward w/ trip. staying at the beach was not an option that i didn't like and hiking out did not appeal to me. im not one to fget off my permit and was not very happy about it, but i wanted to head on in case i got sicker. my plan was to take it easy hiking for a couple of days to try and shake this thing and let my permit catch up w/me. i was told by a ranger that there was water in the major side canyons, and that some hikers had gotten the galloping crud from the water in serpentine canyon. i had filled up my bladder before leaving s. bass but i still needed to pump more at serpentine. my goal was ruby. but before i got there the water started doing its thing.was no surprise for i was warned. needless to say it didn't make me feel any better. stayed in ruby under a ledge for the night. mon. day 3 feeling worse today, was up and down all night digging holes. t.p. situation was looking grim. and wasnt looking foward to using rocks [sandstone]. i always seem to run out of t.p. when i backpack but its usually not a big deal.but this was going to get ugly.wanted to go on and my goaltoday was sapphire canyon about 9 miles. im a pretty strong hiker but i was getting my pumpkin kicked. taking all day to hike to my destination. the tr. has been easy to follow[typical tonto tr.] , and the scenery is as usual spectacular. the weather has been great w/temps in the 80s. finally got to sapphire and set up camp, includig the digging of 5 holes. tues. day 4. my goal today is boucher crk, about 10 miles away. ran out of t.p. last night. let the ugliness begin  woke up feeling a little better today, but still had a touch of the crud. my water filter has become very difficult to use and my backup filter was in my cache. no other backup.thus i have resorted to drinking untreated water. the section of the tonto between slate and boucher is incredible definately coming back here and staying at slate where there is a lot of looking around to do. the decent off the tonto to topaz canyon is steep and seemed long. when i was finnally to the bottom i was greeted w/a beutiful clr. flowing creek that totaally mesmerized me.so much so that i wasnt paying attn. to where i was going and slipped on a rock and fell head first into what seemed to be the only spot w/out any rocks. in a canyon floor full of rocks of all sizes, i was very lucky. BUT because i was carrying my poles and was kind of spacy, i was unable to break my fall and my neck, shoulders, and back absorbed the full force of the fall. amazingly enough i was under way again after a couple of min. of checking myself out. i somehow afterwards made a wrong turn and ended up at boucher beach. not being my intention i stayed only a couple of min. and headed up the crk. to the campsites. it took a while ,but my neck was starting to spaz like a lib who just lost an election. so i took a muscle relaxer and hoped i would be able to hike out tommorow w/out assistance . boucher crk. camp is sweet. day 5 wend.hardly slept at all last night.my neck shoulders and back were screaming bloody murder all night.need to hike out today! :( boucher tr. wasn't going to work for me. decided hermit tr. was the way to go even though it was 13 miles. so onward i went. surprisingly things got better as i went on.reached hermit crk. and took a good break, ate and got more water.about tjhe time i reached santa maria spr. i was having terrible spasms. contemplated staying in the shelter for the night ,but decided to keep going while i still had the ability to carry my pack. made it to the top in 5 hrs from hermit crk. i was anticipating many hours of plodding and suffering. very happy to be there. all in all this was an really beautiful and isolated trip. ran into only 1 person around slate but we didn't stop to talk for i was in a hurry to fall on my head :)

this was a strenuos hike, more suited for 3 days to allow visits to boucher rapids and hermit rapids, which we didn't visit. got a late start on sat., got on the trail about 11:00 or so. went w/ my friends matt and james. boucher tr. was spectacular. the finest rim to the inner canyon tr. i have done yet. this tr. is rugged and long w/ a couple of steep descents really making you work for the spectacular views. it was also pretty clear for the most part to follow the tr. once on the tonto the the next 3 or 4 miles were eye candy and the hiking was easier. w/great views of the river just about the whole way.we camped on the tonto just before travertine canyon. going up the hermit tr. was no picnic  , but we managed a really good pace and was out of the canyon by 4. had a really great time. definately am doing this loop again, soon. very physical hike :D . matt is definatly hooked and were talking south canyon, probably next. this was james first backpack into the canyon. quite the tr. to be on for his first trip. my keyboard work really bites took an hour to type this.

the grand view tr.- it certainly is. from the very beginning it was a feast for the eyes. :D all the buttes and temples of the most popular part of the grand canyon exploded in my face. the air was so crisp and clear that , you could see for what seemed forever. went down w/matt and a couple of his freinds, who were out for a dayhike to the mesa to do some exploring . we parted ways w/them at the cottonwood creek jct. the loop takes you down to the creek, and eventually out onto the tonto, where we headed east to hance creek...our destinatiion for the night. the walk along hance creek is incredible for you can see roughly 800 ft into its rugged inner depths, as we walked along its rim. got to our campsite at dusk and all was good. next day , got up, headed up minor spring trail.... where we came upon an old asbestos/ copper mine.once ownded by miner, pete berry in the late 1800's. checked out the mine and headed out for the caves on top of the mesa.
found the caves checked them out for about an hour.....could have easily spent a day there. they certainly were the highlight of the trip.both matt and i were awestruck. we got back on the trail , heading back to the trailhead. as we got to the top we started running into ppl very interested in where we had been. once at the rim- we hit the showers and headed home. once again another fantastic adventure into the canyon w/matt.

this is one of my favorite loop trips in the superstitions. started at 2nd water tr. to boulder can. tr., cavalry tr., dutchmans tr., bull pass tr., and back on the dutchmans to the t.h. lots of tents at the 2nd water boulder can. junction but after that nobody until 2 miles from the end. decided to forgo the climb up battleship mnt. to look for my knife that i lost up there about a month ago. so i boulder hopped up boulder canyon to the cavalry tr. for a change of pace.little water in boulder except where those million people were camping. from the t.h. allthe way to the cavalry tr. was swarming w/polybine paper wasps. flew up the cav. tr. and once to the top of the climb i went into my hiking trance. this is where i am on auto pilot up till the time i was brought back to life by the rattle of a 3 ft. diamond back. iwas alerted at the last moment about to walk on him when i jumped back at the same time loosing my water bottle out of my mesh pocket which also startled me. a very confusing moment i must say. now there is nothing unusuall about running into rattle snakes i seem to find them all the time especially in the supes. the diamond back being the most common. BUT this was a very unusual encounter, this snake was very aggresive , he or she actually started coming toward me coiled and ready to strike.[ cocky little chums ] it was blocking the tr. and the fabulous catclaw was every where. inch by inch it kept coming and i kept retreating for about 5 feet until i was able to go up and around well away from the snake , the whole time it was rattling furiously. i went back up the tr. to have a look and it was still in strike position holding its ground. this was an awesome encounter and it figures when i have such cool wildlife encounters my video camera was at home. because i was just out to bang some miles today and wasn't thinking about taking pics. i have heard that the western diamond back can be very aggresive and actually come after you but this was the first time i witnessed it first hand. usually they just hold there ground. and if you just stop and back off a bit they will actually stop rattling. could be it was really pissed off because i came really close to stepping on him and it could have been snoozing in the warmth of the sun and we were both startled. after that it was a staight foward hike on an absolutely beautiful day.

wow what an incredible hike. started out at the new hance t.h., no parking is allowed here so i dropped my freind matt off and parked my truck at moran pt. .8 miles away and walked back. we started out at about 10:00.off we went ,when we got to the beginning of the tr. about 1/4 mile from the rd. down we went. and not gradually either.but steeply. i let matt lead so he could break my fall :) because even though we were moving cautiously along i was sking all over the place. the trail required constant attn. to keep from falling on our dumpers or worse yet down a slope. the views were great, but what else would you expect in the greatest natural wonder in the world.we kept going down until we finally entered the wash of red canyon for the last time and remained in it until we hit the river 8 miles and around 6 hrs. from our start.when we hit the wash it started raining on us .we sat at hance beach contemplating going on.since it was loose sand and kind of crappy here we decided to go on. this tr. should have been called red canyon because thats the canyon you continually cross and hance crk. is actually 4 miles to the west of red canyon and the rapids should be switched ,hance rapids should be at hance crk. and sockdolager rpids should be at red canyon.somebody got it ssa sdrawkcab, you figure it out.anyway we headed upstream along the river to papago crk. about a mile away where our progress was stopped by a cliff jutting out into the river this required us to climb about 200 feet up a very steep rockslide with al lkinds of rocks that could let loose at anytime.at the top we worked our way a short distance to the other side where we were confused a bit about where we were going to go down. matt was ready to head down a particularly hard downclimb which as it turned out would have required us to backtrack because of a 40 ft. slick dryfall preventing access to the beach.but i discovered an easier way down marked by a lg. cairn w/a white rock on top of it that we managed to somehow walk right by.so matt went first easily negotiating the 30 foot down climb. i didn't feel comfortable going over the edge because i only had 1 decent hand hold ,and i was going to lower my pack w/some rope when he bounced right back up to just below me where i lowered my pack to him and then was easily able to lower myself down put my pack back on and continued down the wall.once on the beach we set up my tarp in case it rained over night, which had stopped at this time.matt usually carries a solo tent every time we have been backpacking but opted to leave it in the truck.i just sleep under the stars w/a bivy sack over my sleeping bag which keeps me totally waterproof in case of rain and use the tarp as a ground cover.we set up the tarp this night though because we thought the rain would continue, which it didn't.the next day, sunday, we headed out toward 75 mile canyon along the river 1 mile away where our next challenge awaited us. because our progress once again would be blocked along the river by another cliff. go figure. we had the choice of hiking up 75 mile canyon about a mile or two where we could pick up a tr. out of th canyon, this is the easier safer rt. according to nps... or go up the canyon a 1/4 mile and take a very steep 300 foot climb up a ravine. we opted for the climb  the canyon itself was a really nice slot that would have been nice to explore....but we didn't. i went first so i could get some video of matt coming up. we had to first negotiate a 30 foot vertical climb then a 200 foot steep scramble up loose rock and then another 30 foot vertical climb to get to the top. all this w/ packs on... very exciting!!!.once on top we discovered a trail.- that was the one that took you out of the canyon farther up 75 mile.so far so good.we continue on the tr. toward the colorado and after a mile or so dumped us on escalante beach and some really nice hard packed sand.met a couple of guys here that told us about a pack on the tr. ahead of us and there was nobody around....we didn't think anything of it at the time ,said our goodbyes -and started walking up escalante crk.after a while we made it out and looked out at our next stop about a mile ahead and 1000 ft. above the river. when we got to this spot at the end of a long ridge the views were incredible, probably the best of the whole trip!!!.unkar delta was right below us w/awesome3-400 foot cliffs on one of the bends and views both up and down the river. needless to say we spent some time here taking it all in before our next challange- a long traverse on some very steep slopes where the tr. is barely wide enough to walk on.this section required constant attn. for a fall here would truly have been spectacularly deadly . .. w/tape rolling. surely limbs would have been flying away from your body and there would have been pieces everywhere for the nps to collect.i s#@t you not.so we continue on cautiously not wanting to be the main story in "death in the grand canyon part 2"...all of a sudden we came upon that pack 1/2 way along on the upside of the tr... at the top of a very prominent steep ravine.nobody around anywhere...the pack looked like it was deliberately placed there . we turned it over a little and saw the hydration tube had been chewed apart by a mouse . no water -no permit- but fully loaded w/a fishing pole underneath it.we carefuully looked around and saw no skid marks or no bodies laying in the ravine below . even if there was, it would have been way to risky to go down and help, and at this point we were about 15 miles from any t.h. so i could not see abandoning a pack here.we yelled and got no answer...so we continued on w/ this mystery weighing heavily on our minds.when we got to the other side of the wash to where we could scan the area w/matts binos we still didn't see anything.i hated leaving the area not knowing for sure- but there was nothing else we could do...so we continued on not knowing. what a sick feeling that gave me, because i solo a lot. so we finally reach tanner beach .what a nice place w/lots of great campspots on gravelly sandy soil. matt and i staked out our spots and settled in for a restfull night....when all of a sudden matt sees a mouse on his pack.
this is all it took. this mouse was huge w/teeth like a rabbit and fire in his eyes, looked like lucifers pet!! any way i guess they did battle all night w/matt getting 3hrs of sleep during a cease fire . matt finally got me up at 5:10 as planned , he looked ok and the mouse was gone so im guessing the mouse acheived his goal and went home to sleep. so we got going as soon as we could see...and headed up tanner tr. and started out fine w/ some steep sections and then we hit the bottom of the redwall - where the climb really begins very steep but went by quickly. once at the top we took a much deserved break...the views as usual were magnificant.although the lighting was weird...for the next 3 miles before the last 1 1/2 mile assault was relatively easy  .we met 7 hikers on their way down, staying at tanner beach that night . we got out just in time !! for it was matt -the mouse and me down there alone- really cool. :D we took a break at seventy mile saddle looking down its namesake canyon - absolutly fantastic!! it took us 1hr.20min. to get to the top where we immediately started looking for a ride and walked about a mile and a half before some nice people picked us up for what i thought was 17 mile journey back to the truck... and turned out to be 5  our 1st priority was to find a ranger and report the backpack we had found - and turns out the guy was airlifted outfor med. reasons- i don't know why they couldn't take his pack then - but boy was i worried!!!. anyway this trip gets 5 out of 5 stars from me - just the kind of hike i enjoy !
