My son and I started out to do a 2 day route last Saturday beginning at Fred Haught TH at Pinchot Cabin. We travelled U-Bar trail through Barbershop and Dane Canyons. My knees were very sore after the canyons. Water was plentiful at both canyon bottoms. Even with gps track loaded the canyon bottoms are where you'll drop your signal from the sattelites. This is where the time suck begins. Being a novice at the backpacking game we spent over an hour trying to find trails at these points. I did have a map and compass but, well, I guess I need more experience with wilderness navigation. There are some beautiful camp sites down in Dane Canyon however the wind was blowing cold through the canyon and judging by the spatches of deep snow drifts remaining it must stay fairly cold overnight, so we continued up and out of the Canyon until we came to another cabin or half of a cabin. There was a beautiful fresh water spring and although getting cool quickly it was sheltered from the wind. This is where we camped Saturday evening. The night was chilly. Next day hiked out and lost the trail again while on barbershop trail. Fortunately ran into a group of 4 hikers coming towards us in the opposite direction and they told us where we were. Decided due to my aching knees, blistered feet and cut hips I would finish the hike by going North on FR 139 and then veer left on FR 139A back to vehicle. Both very tired and sore at the end of this one. Would do it again only if I did not have a deadline or such a heavy pack. Probably will steer clear of canyons until I get into better shape.
Saw elk and deer and large squirrels on this hike. Heard coyotes from campsite too. Heard a lot of gun fire from hunters. |
