There was water flowing in parts of Peters canyon. I found Peters cave just under 3 hours into the hike. Further up stream I saw a cave behind some bushes high on the canyon wall. I found a place 1/2 mile upstream to scale up to the top of the canyon and then worked my way back to the cave. It was about 8 feet tall, 12 feet wide and 7 feet deep, more of an alcove. Nothing in the cave except some recent bear scat, still moist. Made my way back down to the canyon and hiked out in the dark. Was able to walk the last mile without my headlamp after the 3/4 moon rose over the canyon walls and lit up the area. Saw one striped racer, some birds, several varieties of lizard and lots of flowers. Cool hike but it's tense in spots, especially at night. There's some large boulders (15-20 foot) to navigate and some exposures when going around the slickrock waterfall and the pool just unstream of it. I packed my gear for an overnighter (35# pack) but decided I didn't want to leave my vehicle unattended at the roadside. It would have been much more fun with an early start and a daypack. |
