Spent the last hour+ of the hike down to Reavis creek in the dark and navigated by headlamp. We arrived to the Reavis creek campsite at about 8:00pm and immediately set up camp. We had neighbors next door--a couple of guys that were down there for the weekend like us. It was fun to discuss hiking and gear with them over the weekend as well as other hikes around AZ.
On Saturday we woke up, had breakfast and headed to the falls. The flow rate was pretty good--though definitely not going full blast--still, it was flowing enough to make it a really nice experience. We knew that there was a storm on the way for Saturday night/Early Sunday morning so we spent the afternoon setting up a tarp shelter over the fire pit and proceeded to gather as much firewood as we could. Saturday night was very clear--the stars were great, but it is amazing how much light pollution Phoenix creates even that far away. About 2am, I was awoken to the sound of rain and my hammock having sagged to the ground due to a combination of being wet and the tree I was tied off to becoming more pliable. I (reluctantly) got out of my hammock and proceeded to tighten the suspension and get everything situated. About 3am, my buddy woke me by brushing snow off my tarp and saying that our tarp shelter had blown in and the wood was getting wet. Like a champ, he stayed up throughout the night and fixed the shelter and kept the fire going/dried out the wood.
Awoke at about 5am on Sunday morning and stepped out to 3 inches of snow on the ground!! That was pretty cool as this is a rare thing in AZ. Went over to the fire and found my camp mate tending the fire. We had breakfast and some coffee and began contemplating breaking camp. As we were breaking down camp, a few more snowy/sleet showers came through. Knowing that the trail back would be covered with snow, we headed out pretty early--about 8:30ish. The hike out was amazing and to our surprise, the trail was not that hard to follow--it was pretty slow going though. We lost the trail only once on the way out. Approaching the apogee, a really cold, snow squall came in providing us near whiteout conditions! Despite the cold wind and snow, we headed on as we were getting hungry and soaked. Reached the TH about 1pm, signed out of the wilderness and got in the truck for the ride back to the valley. What a great place! The campsites down there are absolutely cherry! I know I will go back again--hopefully sooner rather than later |
