Access to this trail is on public R-O-W on S. Gibson Ct. with public parking. The Tonto National Forest Service posts this Trailhead as "Mud Springs" and the Town of Payson calls this TH "Round Valley". The trail goes down to Stewart Pocket and merges with the extensive trail system from the end of Phoenix Street Cul-de-sac. The view from this trail is spectacular. There is an intersection off this trail that goes up to Stewart Ridge for even better vistas. The original old trail did briefly clip private property and that section is posted and closed. However, there are now (7/4/22) 2 new-ish cleared and established bypass trail sections that goes up and over the rock outcropping. There is an upper one that is 95% done that leaves from an intersection at one of the switchbacks and reconnects to the outer loop in the Stewart Pocket. The beginning and the end of this upper trail is work in progress and best to follow the new HikeArizona Route. The lower one is near the National Forest fence line and stays near the fence line for a few hundred feet to avoid going on private property. Both of these Bypass sections are no more difficult than any of the other non-PATs trails in the area. The lower bypass reconnects to the original trail right pass the private property section. If there is no parking spots at the end of Phoenix, this is an excellent alternative, only adding a mile round trip to your hike and being rewarded with fabulous views. It is 'upside down' so be prepared for your uphill return!

We thought we would try this hike just because it was new to us. Unlike trying to get to Joe's trailhead by his directions (which is a little more difficult to get to), we did a 180 on 260E right after the bridge, coming back across the bridge on 260W and there is a parking area right after the bridge on the left between the divided highway. The ATV road down to the trailhead begins right at the parking area. Going up, we followed the dirt road on the old alignment taking the first L where it switched back down to the creek bed and Preacher Canyon. As Joe mentioned there are some really steep sections. This ATV road is used by rock crawlers and has a lot of loose stones and gravel. At the feed bin (Joe's picture) the road crosses the stream and goes up a steep incline. We opted to go left and follow the stream bed. This route is really rocky and gnarly. But what is amazing is that rock crawlers go this way going almost all the way up the canyon to where it narrows to a high dry falls. Incredibly steep and rocky. I do not know how any vehicle could ever climb this terrain, but wide tire tracks left proof. We were greeted by the spring mating calls of frogs - incredibly loud, but well hidden. The hike / rock climb up this canyon was pretty interesting and visual and was the highlight of the hike. Returning, we stayed in the stream bed vs the road. We never came across a barbed wire fence.

Unlike my West Clear Creek hike last week that was disappointing, I was pleasantly surprised how nice a short evening hike was from the City Creek TH near the old Doll Baby Ranch outside of Payson. This hike exceeded my expectations: very scenic, great views from the ridge, a lot of wild flowers (I have never seen so many Sego Lily's anywhere in my years of treking around the west!), much greener than I expected, and the nice steady modest uphill grade made for a good even pace.

I would have to describe this hike as a tease, especially driving down the last mile and all of a sudden seeing this ribbon of lush spring green along the river valley. I almost thought this might be like Aravaipa! Not! I hiked a little beyond the 4th crossing and 95% of the time the trail was not near the creek, nor even in the shade under all the cottonwoods that lined the banks. Crossings were uneventful, with only the first crossing thigh deep. The surrounding cliffs and mountains were scenic, but couldn't offset my disappointment with how dry and exposed the trail was. Why the trail was sited the way it was is a mystery. For me, this trail is not worthy of a repeat, though I'm glad I at least checked it out

Foliage not only is at peak, but may be the best in years! The area right before the TH parking lot is so intense with every fall color, and the leaves and trees are healthy - leaves are not dry or muted! I went up both the Canyon trail until the last maple glen at the base of the rim and also the spur trail to the spring (which has a heavy flow!) Both trails are spectacular with a riot of color. If you only have time for one, the See Spring spur has almost constant color!

Hiking to what I call Foliage Canyon on Highline Trail going East from the See Canyon TH is showing some good color. Isolated color on the way, but good color in 'Foliage' Canyon especially returning back down the canyon on the old (...hidden) highline trail that stays right next to the stream bed. Hard to find old trail, but check out my route ID 52587 for the GPS

Hiked from Back O'Beyond Cathedral TH to Red Rock Crossing. Fantastic pre-peak foliage along Oak Creek at Red Rock Crossing, still with many trees green, so should be good for at least a week or more

well past peak and many trees going straight to brown without color. Just not a good year because of the drought. One good section at the beginning of trail on otherside of creek but won't be long before all leaves are gone.

Just posted the Guide and Route for this Trail. This is one of Payson's best, if not THE BEST. The 2mi Old Fox Farm connector section keeps on being hidden by branches as was today. See Photoset to help locating the intersection. Absolutely beautiful hike and nice to have a longer loop in Stewart Pocket.

I took 2 hikes from See Canyon TH. Foliage in the parking lot area is good but still pre peak. First hike went east on Highline. The first wash crossing after 15 minutes was still green. After 25 more minutes, you cross the second wash and enter the bottom of what should be call Foliage Canyon. The bottom was pre but with color, midway up had tons of color but still pre. Almost at the end of the maple / oak section of the canyon was full on Peak, and when you cross the next wash, the leaves were all brown and past peak. If one can find the old trail (hidden by FS with logs etc) it stays in the canyon bottom following the wash and color is EXTREME. I will upload a route for the old trail. Otherwise, as you go up the canyon, about 100' before the first switch back, look for a trail covered with logs that heads down to the wash. That is the old original trail and follows the wash up and rejoins the trail further up. I also did See Canyon Trail, except for a nice group of maples 2 minutes from the Highline Intersection and then again right after crossing the See Spring creek, there is little color and all very pre... Pics to follow...

Foliage report: Aspen Corner was still pre-peak but a lot of color. (Viet Springs looked pre...) Snowbowl slope was post peak with yellows turning brownish. Kachina Trail from the Snowbowl TH was really good. There were stands of Aspen that were peak, and some stands still pre, and some areas still green. A few stands were post-peak. The yellows were not as intense as years prior due to the drought, but with such a spread from pre to post peak, ane can't miss. The previous weekend I did Lockett meadow and Inner Basin and it was peak!

It is hard to find a more scenic hike in the Valley especially this time of year when the wildflowers are in their splendor, numerous and all along the trail and slopes. The poppies were numerous and their happy faces defied one not to smile. Even without the wildflowers, the vegetation is more lush than most Valley trails and of course the healthy mature Saguaro's just add to the beauty. The trail has continuous ups & downs, so one gets a reasonable workout. With the lake and the surrounding mountains, it is wall-wall scenic wonderland. Today, the puffy white cumulus clouds against the blue blue sky, just made for many Kodak moments. Even more surprising, a Saturday with perfect weather with spring wildflowers, and might have passed only a handful of people - go figure!

Maybe at peak. Almost continuous wildflowers in bloom along trail, especially first half. Poppies are numerous along trail, though no huge large patches.

This was a foliage hike from See Canyon TH east on the Highline Trail towards the 260 TH. After the foliage around See Canyon TH (especially the parking lot area that was at Peak and spectacular) the second major canyon you go up at about 1.4 miles from the See Canyon TH is a great foliage area all the way up the Canyon.

Foliage was past peak but still great. This area usually can be better tha See Canyon, but not this year. Many maples went to yellow with only a few red. Colors were pastel. Best colors and foliage were only the old trail (now closed and 'hidden') that stays close to the creek bed all the way up.
