Beautiful venture through the canyon on a nice cool weekend in the middle of the hot October.

Brought my 3 year old daughter to see the canyon. Saw a lot of deer, caught and released a fish, got rained on ever so lightly. Always a treat in the canyon.

Also saw jamsonweed in there for the first time, and it was pretty prevalent.

Another yearly trip to Aravaipa, another crazy year of weather. Last year was a scorcher when we went, this year we got rained on and had the creek rise on us overnight. Nothing too sketchy, but based off of the branches and random flotsam and jetsom, we decided we'd book it out of there. Amazing as usual, be back later this year.

Beautiful overnight in Aravaipa. Got rained on, and saw the creek turn from crystal clear to brown and from nice and calm to fairly strong the next morning. With clouds still on the horizon, we decided it was time to boogie. It was my daughter's 3rd time in the canyon, but first time being rained on (as well as lightning and thunder). Some pretty decent mud on the drive out as well as puddles, but never seemed deep enough to really get you stuck.

Took a hike with the kiddos. Had been in this area for years but not tried this trail. Was great for the little ones and the canyon was very inviting. A few standing pools of water in the main canyon on the way to the spring. Will try again during the next winter rains.

Nice quad and side-by-side ride down Juniper Ridge with the fam. Beautiful area, even if there is still some burn present. The lookout tower is closed to traffic, and the actual tower is still closed too. After you pass the tower itself and travel further East, you come across a MONSTER Juniper, sadly didn't get a picture of it. On the way back nearly ran over what I believe was a gopher snake, but I'm no expert. Good fall color, not too much on the ground yet but a ton of acorns!

Took my 3 year old daughter for her first ever backpacking trip! We went in about 2 miles just past Hell's Half Acre canyon and then camped right next to the creek.

Everything I could have expected from a 3 year old backpacking, I carried her for a lot of the way in and then she walked almost the whole way out herself, in the creek! A chip off the old block, she definitely enjoys walking through water than around it. One of my favorite places spent with one of my favorite people, truly a special experience!

Went after I thought the snow had melted, turns out not so much! Ended up getting a fair amount of snow after the saddle. Went up just past Chilson Spring and back, the Spring was recently revamped and looks great.

Overall, a very memorable and beautiful morning!

A trip I did a while back in search of yellow lichen covered hills North of Apache Trail in Mesquite Flat. Fun time running around back there, saw some coues deer, fox, and other things that were generally not used to being disturbed back in the middle of nowhere. If I hadn't had my daughter with me I would've done some more climbing but as it was, still a pleasant little adventure!

After a few other planned trips got scrapped due to covid, I convinced a buddy of mine to do this recreation of Joel Hazelton, Chumley, MountainMatt, and JohnnyBackpack's trip to the middle section of Haigler Creek via Big Ridge trail and Salt Canyon.

Getting to Salt Canyon was a bit of a trip for sure, being careful to skirt around all of the private property signs. At first when looking at google earth I though that big ridge trail was driveable if you went through Gordon Creek, but the pictures don't do it justice. That road is rocky and steep. I wouldn't take anything but a tricked-out Jeep or an ATV on that thing.

Salt Canyon was a bushwhacking jungle, including a serious ton of poison ivy that I must have gotten hit by on the way back without noticing because I was feeling it for two weeks after. The actual canyon itself wasn't bad, some minor boulder hopping with backpacks and some dryfall negotiating but nothing too bad.

Once we got down to Haigler Creek, which was nice and clear (much better than the last time I was there), we blew up our inflatables and floated our packs to the same campsite our predecessors stayed at, which was ideal! After dropping our backs and having some lunch, we made it all the way to Hellsgate, taking in some seriously beautiful but tiring landscapes. Can't get enough of that pink granite! It's not too far of a distance, but that really tired us out. The next morning we made our way out, and surprisingly neither of our packs got soaked using the rafts again.

Truly an amazing place and worth the effort, but it was definitely a hard-fought scenic route!

Long story made short, finally made my way back up the Blue, headed over to Hannah Hot Springs, and had a beautiful time in arguably one of the most remote, rugged, and beautiful parts of the state. I love this place. Despite all the trouble getting there, torn up tires on the last 3 miles of road, and just difficulty in getting back there, it's something special.

Looking back to journeys a little over a year ago to Waterwheel Falls, Ellison Creek Cascade, and the East Verde River. Wish I could visit this area this year but hope the continued fire restrictions and area closures help!

Had a good hike up to the railroad tunnel during the twilight hours. Not too bad of a hike, a little steep but short. Once turning off onto the Railroad tunnel trail off of the railroad tunnel loop 390 trail, it became VERY necessary to look at my GPS constantly (got lost a few times). In the daylight on the way back it was just fine, but getting up there with nothing but flashlights was tough. The tunnel itself and powderhouse/moonshine spot was really interesting. Don't know if that was the best place to put a railroad, but it sure helped the next morning when it started hailing/raining at about 5 am to get out of the water's way. Overall, a great trip and an enjoyable place to hike/camp at! Having spent a lot of time in the East Verde, it was great to be able to see where it starts! Definitely worth a return trip.

Went with a few guys into the Blue Range Primitive area for the first time! We set out on Thursday and made it down Juan Miller (FR475) without any issues, and down the sketchy XXX Ranch Road (FR475C) as well. Wouldn't recommend XXX Ranch Road without decent clearance and 4WD. Got down to the ranch and hiked up the Blue river for a mile or so and made camp over night. The next day we followed the Blue River trail up to the Little Blue, and then eventually up to Hannah creek canyon and the hot springs themselves. We camped at the campsite just above the springs and were pretty impressed with the view. I've never camped at a hot spring before so getting the chance to soak in a hot tub after a long day of hiking was a new sensation!
The next day we started hiking North towards Winter cabin along Dutch Blue trail, when it became VERY apparent that the "dotted line" suggesting a trail was merely a suggestion and nothing else, as we were crossing over game trails and canyons to try and stay on the trail. After a while of exposed hiking over hills and prickly pear cactus, we decided to hike down into Dutch Blue creek and head back the way we came. This ended up being one of the major highlights of the trip as the narrow section of Dutch Blue creek was a textbook example of nice narrow non-technical slot canyon. Would definitely recommend the journey up that section past White Rocks Cabin for anyone a fan of narrow sections. After getting back to camp, we all cooled off/heated up in the variety of different temperature pools available. The next morning we got up and booked it out of there in order to give ourselves enough time for the 5 hour drive back home.
I had never been to, or even HEARD of Hannah Hot Springs before I got invited on this trek, but I was impressed. I had heard descriptions saying that the canyons were gorgeous but the hot spring was nothing to write home about, and while the hot spring itself isn't the most photogenic, the area has a great air to it. Would definitely go back, when I have the time and the proper vehicle again!

I've been trying to do this hike for years, and it's been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember. I had two objectives for this hike: see Aravaipa canyon and see a Coati in the wild (which I had never done). I'm happy to report success on both counts.

A friend and I were spending our last Spring Break of Grad school by checking some hikes off of our list, so we did Havasupai over the weekend, got back and had a day to rest, and then set off to do Aravaipa.
We spent the first day exploring the main canyon and Horse Camp canyon. We originally set up camp right next to Horse Camp canyon, then had to retreat to a different campsite further upstream due to an influx of a thousand flies.
The next morning on the way out we ran into about 15 Coati making their way up the canyon. We then enjoyed a relaxing stroll out of the canyon and back up to the car.
Overall, this place was as peaceful and serene as I had been told, and the wildlife lived up to expectation as well. I'll definitely be back.

Had a good portion of the day and decided I wanted to head out to Devil's canyon since it had been about 3 years since I last ventured out that way. I convinced a buddy of mine to go with me and we headed out. Last time I was there I benefited from the fact that Resolution Copper had graded the road pretty well all the way out down the last big hill and it wasn't too bad coming down that road. Well... 3 years and excessive erosion has made that trip a lot sketchier. I went down in my 97 Tacoma, and with 4WD it was doable, but I was sweating heavily on the way up and down the big hill before you park. :scared: Once we got down the hill the field surrounding the tank at the bottom was found to be muddy, but the muddiest bits were easily bypassed and we had no problems.
Was happy to find a decent little flow through Hackberry creek. It had been about a month since some serious rain so I guessed it was possible but wasn't trying to get my hopes up. Because of that the "dry falls" were a little wet, so scrambling down it was a bit trickier but not impossible. Devil's creek had a nice flow to it, and we had lunch and turned around at Peninsula falls (didn't know it was called that until looking at the water reports, makes sense though given the formation).
Ran into people for the first time ever in Devil's canyon. 3 guys from Resolution Copper were there at the creek taking water composition measurements. They said they take the trip every quarter to establish baseline readings so that they can track the impact of the mining. I don't have the greatest of feelings for Resolution Copper and how they've transformed an area I've loved since I was a kid (even though I've benefited from some of their road improvements), but these guys were nice and wished us well on our way. They seemed pretty surprised to see anybody in there too, and I heard them remark as we left that they hadn't seen anyone in there before.
Due to the flooding back in January from the week of serious rain, all the poison ivy has been washed away, making for easy going.
The drive out was as nerve-racking as the drive in :scared: , but we all made it out relatively unscathed! :D
Overall, a great trip to a place I've loved for a while.

Sooooooo, I apologize for the picture quality. As soon as we got down to the creek we turned left and went over to take a look at the hanging gardens and spring before turning East and heading towards Maxwell trail. I snapped a few up-close pictures of the spring and then swam away. When I got back to dry land I checked for my waterproof camera and realized it had slipped out. I borrowed a pair of diver's goggles from a nice couple camping nearby, and went swimming in the freezing waters for about half an hour to try and find them. Unfortunately, I dropped them in the most algae-ridden pool in all of west clear creek, so it is lost to the ages. ](*,) If anyone finds a blue-silver Olympus camera there, you know who it belongs to! So, with a heavy heart, we proceeded East towards Maxwell trail. All of the pictures I've posted had to be taken with my phone.

Absolutely gorgeous day in the canyon, super windy too. Met a nice guy fishing who fell in right in front of the spring East of Sundance canyon. Also met some guys doing a 4-day trek from 144F to Bullpen (I was pretty jealous).

About half way through to Maxwell trail, we hiked up a bit on the canyon wall through some thicket after following a trail that got a bit sticky. While we were making our way back down, I saw a few brown blurs slide through the thickets toward the creek. As we moved forward we spooked one of them so that the doe came passed up right in front of us to get higher out of the canyon. I thought we'd seen the last of her but as we pushed forward a few seconds later I turned and she was just staring at us. I guess she figured we weren't much of a threat, and slowly turned and went on her way. Never saw the other one but definitely heard him. It was a nice treat, kind of made losing my camera worth it.

We enjoyed the rest of the view on to Maxwell trail. I'd hiked Point trail and Maxwell trail on separate occasions, so it was nice to connect the two and see everything in between.

Climbing back out was tiring, as per usual, but overall a great day, regardless of the loss!

Looking forward to Labor Day weekend, I decided I wanted to try somewhere new. I then did what I always do when I'm looking for an adventure: check out logs on hikeaz. I saw this place and decided to give it a shot! I brought a buddy of mine and we headed out to Bloody Basin road. I had never gone back on this road before, and while the description shows a car as being okay, I wouldn't recommend it, as it would take a LOT longer. Anyways, seeing water on the way in along the road and crashing down the hillsides was a great indicator.

At the trailhead, we headed down and I saw quickly how long down this was. Not too bad really, but definitely a long slog back up. Getting in to the creek, I found the water to be PERFECT! Just refreshing enough to be amazing, but not too cold at all. Probably the best water-temperature/outdoor-temperature mix I've had in a long time :y: . Made our way down and shortly got the waterfall. The pool certainly is a lot smaller than it used to be (based off of the old Pics). At it's deepest it's only about 6 feet deep, so I wouldn't recommend jumping. The rope that used to be there is no more. My buddy wasn't quite as comfortable with the scramble down the rock, but made it mostly unscathed (mostly being the operative word :? ). I'd definitely recommend bringing something to tie off to allow easier access. Not that big of a deal on the way down, but a lot harder getting up. Anyways, enjoyed the falls for a while and then headed down stream to see some other cascades, frogs, tracks I didn't recognize, and some fun little slogs. One thing I'll say about this place, watch where you step! With all the silt in there now, you can easily sink down a foot or two where you thought it looked solid (that's what I did!).

Made our way back up the waterfall (with some difficulty), and then the long hike out. The weather was gorgeous and we hiked in the shade almost all the way up. About 5 hours at a nice leisurely pace and chilling for a while down at the falls.

Overall, I didn't know what to expect with this place. While this waterfall wasn't the most spectacular I've ever seen, nor the biggest, it certainly is one of my favorites now. Something about it just made me feel at home! Definitely want to go back!

I've been using this website for years and owe some of my best hiking experiences to this website and the network of folks that support it. I've been meaning to post my photos for a while, so now I finally have gotten around to it.

The subway was a hike I had been meaning to do when I decided to go back to Zion for the first time in 10 years. From start to finish it was amazing. The permit process was a pain, but when all was said and done, it was an amazing semi-technical slot canyon experience. My word of advice to anyone would be to avoid doing the bottom-up trail unless you have someone who CANNOT do the top-down route. The scrambling and boulder-hopping part on the bottom is by far the least memorable/enjoyable part of the trip, so doing it twice didn't appeal to me at all. We brought 85 feet of webbing and were able to handline down the few waterfalls that needed it. The benefit to going in late July-early August is that you are in the water during the hottest months. The downside is that the normally-clear water can be nasty due to all the recent rains and flash floods. Between all the hikes I've done in Zion, the Subway is by far the best! Gorgeous scenery and some adventurous bits to boot.

I had tried going to Peter's canyon before, but it was too hot. This day I set out with a buddy and the dog to get back there and see what all the fuss was about.

After making it back there, and I can definitely say it's worth the effort. I was seriously impressed how it still had a decent trickle despite it was two months since the last rainfall. Timing is everything here, without a decent flow it's a nice canyon but I'd really like to see it right after a good few monsoons.

On a side note: I wouldn't recommend dogs. I kind of knew that going in, but was a bit stubborn about it. Not a particularly easy trip for the guy. Between the relatively sharp, hot rocks and the water, it was a nightmare on his pads.

Back in February 2013, we had a nice little snowstorm roll through. Some may even remember it as the day that snow came to Scottsdale for the first time in a LONG time. The next day I had a decent break in my schedule so I packed my bag, grabbed the dog, and headed out for a serene experience.

Seeing snow on the cars as I went through AJ was a good sign. When I got to the trailhead, snow was even at the bottom of the wash. By the time I got back, the snow that was at the bottom was completely gone, showing I hit the very fine window to be able to hike in what i did. The hike up was amazing, and it was my dog's first real venture through the snow. The falls weren't running much, but I didn't care that day. The views looking to the Supes and Four Peaks more than made up for the lack of running water. I'll certainly be on the lookout for any other good snow storms, but I don't think I'll ever be able to recreate that experience.
