The day was mid February, but still called for the seemingly all year uniform in Tucson: t-shirt or tank top. The Romero Trail is well kept up; For me it was a perfect return to hiking choice. 6 mos lethargy, then 4.5 miles, 1000 foot elevation gain, was hard for this 71 y/o guy.The people on the trail were the nicest, most courteous ever. Is that a Catalina Park thing?

A 1200 foot hike in the historic remote Eastern Az territory. We climbed with the Gila Valley hiking club; it was a fun day. Last view of snow maybe. :)

I like to leave a triplog after a hike, even a small inner city one; just to keep a record and say hello. Cloudy perfect Round Mountain Loop with one extraordinary event: Beautiful purple fields of Brompton Stock Flowers, the fragrance was an outdoor bucket list level experience.

How a popular well known Southern Arizona Trail can end mid mountain in an erased vanished tree and brush fallen state is beyond me. My 2 wheel drive jeep made it to the Frye Mesa Trailhead. I set out on a beautiful Fall Saturday at 8 AM. The mountain, the absolutely roaring stream, the fall colors did not disappoint!
You arrive at an old sign for Frye Trail at about 2 3/4 miles. See photos. You still have 1/4 mile to the Round the Mountain "T" -the end of Frye Canyon Trail. But the problem is there is no more trail. You look all around and you see nothing-except catclaw, and, scattered fallen trees. You've hit the multi Mount Graham wall. I bushwhacked to the spot where Frye C Trail hits RTM, but no cross trail was found. No trails at all were found. Wow, it would be a blessing if those who know how to restore trails did so for the special Round The Mountain, which I really like as it runs right into the heart of the mountain. Have any local hikers found the T connection and used it in either direction? Still a good 6 mile, 1800 elevation gain Saturday.

Mount Graham has many super magnificent trails. The shake trail may arguably be in the top 3 for beauty on the mountain. Lots of variety, well-designed, and, pine needles under feet. Difficult in late summer though with the first 2 miles of deer grass up to your arms; so you cannot see your feet. Once in the mountain, it's heaven hiking on well-placed switchbacks. I encountered deer 3 times. Nice to rest on the side of 366 on top.

An absolute gem of an after work Mountain Wind down - 5 minutes from Globe city center!!!. Or, a convenient day hike with a friend is good too. The route is round, the rocks are round, you will feel well rounded after 3.75 miles and 1 hour 45 minutes. The park trails are immaculate, not one bottle, nor paper strewn; quite impressive Globe and respectful Globe area users, as the park is right there! The trail guide is right on.The trail is all 'rights' till you get to the first left Ridge trail. Then basically hike to the flag on top. There is some respectable grade, so exercise is available for all level of hiker. The trails include in ground plant guides of some Arizona desert flora I found highly informative.

Want the cushy pasteur pine covered hike, with some exercise? -without the scrambly somewhat dangeous hot-sunny steep Arizona type sections? Maybe family is around? Snow flat is the otherworldly starting point. Basically you just hike any of the forest roads around and enjoy the hike. There are two kinda secret side trips along 2 flowing (in June) creeks-crystal clear creeks. The home triplog describes number 2 exactly, (it's behind the little snow flat pond you will see)! You can see number one, (actually in Treasure Park), in my route (it's the out and back part along the blue highlighted stream). I did this trip today and hiked 5 miles or so and 800 feet elevation and a 1000 calories burnt. GREAT DAY, Enjoy!

The trail right in front of you is some times the best. -I was set on Grant Goudy Trail on the other side of My Graham, but, rain was forecast. Probably, the closest trail to Safford, chose Noon Creek to Round the Mountain left to Noon Creek Ridge down by RTM spur from 360.No flowing water, but trail is fantastic till it's confusing end at 6800 feet. I scrambled up to the ridge top to get to 7000', but fell short, and, found no trail. The last mile trail to Arcadia Trail does not exist anymore from noon Creek Ridge. I tried an old trail down from 360 seen on the map which brings you back to noon Creek campgrounds. Was a bush-wack, please do not use but got to car slowly. I had an adventure and as always loved the time on Mt Graham.

The best hike when family are in town! Or, perhaps your wife is a rare hiker. The soft footed covered Trail to Heliograph Peak is a great choice. You can hike the mile to Eagle Rock like we did, to the dramatic Eagle Rock. Rest, and hike back to Shannon's n Campground. The view to the north is expansive, inspiring. You do climb gradually 300 feet for good exercise. Come in late July and join the bears for sweet Mt Graham raspberries. :D

The Heliograph Peak provides an easy access to a 10,000 altitude arrival, and, is the top, and, cool! The loop has 3 main attractions, the crazy high tower at the spacious top, raspberry bushes along the way, and, our beautiful quaking aspens line the entire loop. We started about 9:30 and done about 1:30 pm. The walk up is a smooth dirt road, down, a beauty through the forest. So wish list this 1000' altitude hike, and, the one of a kind drive up Mt Graham Swift Trail

Basset Peak is in the Galiuro Mountains, an extremely isolated sky island in the middle of nowhere. But, is a beautifully carved long trail in otherworldly Galiuros. I got up at 530 but started trail at 9. The first 2 miles is little gain in a covered Evergreen forest type road. The climb starts in forest conditions, steep, but never very steep, as hike is well stretched. You get ticked off a little, as it's hard to out hike the black water tube which finally finds the spring around 6200 feet. Here there is a clear pool off water where I found 15 Arizona Sister butterflies bathing and eating. The breakout is big views and Arizona type bright rock swithbacks. You enter a small Aspen type forest again before the "Gigantic View" super ridge. The east divide it's called I believe. WOW!! You've hiked 4.1 miles. The ridge calls your resting gene, overwhelming sites both sides. But now you face the very unique 1.4 mile Bassett peak run. The 1st mile is flat 'ledge', crazy spire rocks in your view. Just stay on ledge,on course. There are 2 more earn your hike's. Pretty steep up through the forest, but with switchbacks and, a bushwack the final 120'. This is a hikers hike-variety packed and a challenge. 11.5 out and back.

There are three important highpoints when considering Bear Canyon on Mt Graham's east side. One the footpath is smooth terrain, virtually no rocky paths, top to bottom.(2) There is a trail.(3)the R/T Will not take you 14 hours!! I started late, walked out in dark, don't do that.
There is a safe pull off for your vehicle right off 266. There was a full mile of meandering juniper flatland, which I like in a hike. Then baboom you are swallowed up in the cut peak filled canyon all around you. Views to East of the little known range. The Bear C hike, this area, is not forgiving of bush wacking.. So, take the time, nail down the trail. You will be shined on by the radiant Eastern Sun all the way to 7500 but kind of on your back . So soon, this climb will not be advisable (this is May 1.)
This hike is a very doable day hike for serious hikers, but start early of course. The creme de la creme is the last 1000 feet. All smooth footed full shaded pine forest, and not steep. Bear sign is for sure.We need more foot traffic here, so consider invitation sent.
