A group of us did this hike together. Started out cold, then became warm, then got cold again, then warm....Ugh!.

the creek was flowing pretty well. plenty of olaces for photo ops.

second time I have done this hike. I forgot how unstable most of the trail is, with large rocks making up the trail most of the way. the top is a great place to sit down for a while and enjoy lunch.

What an awesome hike. Kind of like Camelback on steroids. as others have pointed out, the top is quite charred. a volunteer for the forest service pointed out a paw print the size of a soup bowl at the top. he said it was from a mountain lion.

The first views from the top were awesome.......then we found out this wasn't the top, and we were pointed about another mile away, to the actual top. My heart sunk, but it was sooooo worth the hike. the views from the actual top are even better.

stayed at the top for only about 15 minutes, as the second part of the venture was even better.....lunch and some beers at Oak Creek Brewery.

Spent the weekend up in Pine, and used the lull in the action on Saturday to check out the Natural Bridge. Quite an awesome site. there were several Javelina at the Ranger Station area. The hike down and up was a good workout. I checked out some of the caves on the north side and then walked under the waterfall on the south side. this short/little hike actually packs a lot of sights. the steps that ascend the face on the south side were closed, so we had to walk back out the dirt trail.

this is a little too far to go just to see it alone. it makes for a good second hike if you have time while in the area. Or a side trip if you are staying in the area. It definately is something you have to see, though.

When I found out it was going to snow this weekend, we decided to head up Saturday morning before it came down hard. Made it to the trail head by 0930A.M. and the place was covered in snow. it was the most amazing site i have seen in Sedona. It was so nice that we decided to strand ourselves in Sedona for the night and made the best of it.

the trail was easy to see, even towards the end, where it was covered in about three inches of snow. the red rocks, the green trees, and the white snow were awesome. We definately lucked out on this day.

Could not make it up to the ruins, but there was a volunteer from the forest service in front of us who pointed out each of the ruins as we past them. I truly hope the pics come through, so you can see how beautiful it was.

(As a side note, we tried to get up to West Fork as well, but the snow was TOO MUCH. it snowed SO HARD that the place was closed...or atleast the gate was.)

spent Thanksgiving morning doing this hike. it was surprisingly warm this morning. on the north side of Courthouse Butte it cooled down, until we made it around to the south face again. this was a beautiful hike. there were quite a few bicyclists on the Bell Rock path, but none on the Courthouse Butte portion. ran into a few other hikers and a few people on horses. there is large mound on the north side of the Butte. it is easy to get on top of and the view adds a pretty cool extra to the hike. There is a great view (off in the distance) of the Chappel in the rock, from the north side of this trail. not many good photo opps., but it was still a great hike.

i have not been on this trail since the floods last year. still in good shape, but the signs of errosion are obvious in some places. still the best hike in Sedona, in my opinion. it was a great way to get out of the never ending heat in the valley. my girlfriend's first time on this trail, and my 6th. we both enjoyed it equally. i will never get tired of this hike.

This is my first time on this trail. it is a very nice trail with ascents and descents, and different landscapes. the one thing that kills it is the wonderful (sarcasm) views of the town and 89A almost half of the hike. the other half is beautiful. My girlfriend and I started out at about 1000am and did not encounter too much foot traffic. a few mountian bikers, but they were very cordial.

A note to anyone making the day trip into Sedona to do a hike. GET THERE EARLY. this place fills up faster than horny men at a free burlesque show. the vehicle traffic is like molasses, which the usual Sedona traveler already knows.

This hike was decided right when we got to Schnebly Hill Road. i saw the traffic and decided against going onto 89A. This hike made it worth while, and saved me from the head ache of the snails pace traffic. there is a station for purchasing the red rock pass at the trail head....just an FYI.

the first part of the hike there is no shade, and the second half is almost all shade. the trail is very well kept, and easy to follow. pack a lunch and find a boulder out in the stream to eat on. there are some places, about 200-300 yards shy of the bridge where you can get out into the stream, by rock hopping, and set up lunch.

over all, I think this is a 3 1/2 out of 5.

this was a great hike. as said before, there is no warm up period. you basically take off straight up hill. for those who are a little squeemish with heights, ledges, and cliffs, you may want to think twice. i am EXTREMELY paranoid of the forementioned. however, the view and the experience was far too awesome not to push myself to the top. i usually like the flat trails, or ones around streams, but this i will do again (Fear or no fear). not a great hike for little kids, as there is a need for some upper body strength to pull yourself up in some places, and hold your weight up as you go down. I watched one kid in front of us fall three times, and he left bruised and bleeding.

Hunter trail was the shorter of the two, but as some of the regulars up there said, it is the harder of the two. if you are in to more than just a walk in the woods, then this is the hike for you. you can see the Phoenix and Tucson mountain ranges from the top (On a clear day.....if and when we get one around here.)

This hike was so wonderful two weeks prior, that I just had to take my father and kid sisiter when they came into town. the falls were not as heavy, but it rained on this day. The supes were covered in clouds. I have seen other's pics of the cloud covered Supes, and thought they looked awesome. it was nice to finally see it myself. My sister and father (From New England) could not believe how beautiful the desert southwest could be, on there first hike in this part of the country. My sister was a bit braver than myself when it came to testing the edge of the cliff wall, for a peak over the side. Since this was my third time on thie trail, i think it's time to give the south side of the supes a try.

i did this hike right after a heavy rain weekend, and the waterfall was flowing heavily. It was such a nice hike to do with the added water features. I did this hike when it was dry, and I will only do it wet from now on. for some reason the waterfall and flowing streams made this hike such a wonderful sight. thank god for the rainy season we have had. the wildflowers were just starting to bloom.

the description of this hike is right on. The ride in is a lot of fun, and i do not recomend anything other than a high clearance vehicle.

I learned a valuable lesson on this hike. don't just plan on how much water to bring with you, but load up on water before you start. get your body good and hydrated before you start. then the water you planned on, will suffice. I ran out of water on the middle of the descent and it was a scorcher on this day.

lesson two. if you are allergic to bee stings, get an eppy pin. about 80% of the way up, we took off in a dead sprint to outrun a swarm who i am sure was just protecting the hive. Didn't think i would run into bees, but nothing can mistake the low hum of a bee, as opposed to high pitch of a fly. needless to say, we went off trail around the hive area and took the lava rocks down for about 80 feet or so.

this hike was beautiful. i could hear a coyote early in the morning, and there were plenty of colorful birds around us. the many different types of rock made for a wonderful time. the lava rocks, and quartz, etc.

as someone else said, don't be fooled as you look at this hill from afar. there is plenty of beautiful scenery to keep you happy, and you couldn't buy a better view from the top.

this was the fourth time i have hiked this, but the first time i have logged it, and made it to the very end. speaking of the very end, whatever you wear on your feet for the hike is fine. i saw sturdy boots on down to Tevas. do yourself a favor and bring something to walk in the water. when you get to the end you will really want to continue up the creek, in the creek. i tried the barefoot thing and made it about fifty feet before quiting due to the rocks.
This is and has always been my favorite hike in AZ. My advice is this. allow time for pictures, pack a lunch, and GET THERE EARLY. unless you like to hike with people all around you, then the earlier the better. on this day there was a bus load of students, and LOUD, REAL LOUD cherubs screaming up the creek. Thank god it was on the way back. it kind of took some of the serenity out of this beautiful hike. the trail is easy to follow across the stream crossings, except for one area about 3/4's of the way in. A little discovering and we were back on trail. This is a great trail to bring a dog on (plenty of shade and water).

Glad to be back on the trail agian after a half year lay-off. i have always wanted to see this archway, and it was worth the wait. I decided that since it was a short enough hike, and since i got to Sedona early enough, that I would couple this with a second hike. (West Fork)
The distance was short and the climb was not that bad at all. be sure to go to the top and to the bottom. the bridge is just as wonderful from both views.

(Hey Trish, I'm back. )

I did this hike this A.M. and when I started out it was about 28 degrees. It was the closest thing to a cold winter New England Hike that I have found in AZ., and I loved it.

The hike was awesome. It was cold, and there was no one else around, and not a single new dwelling in sight. My kind of hike. about 80% of this hike to the springs is uphill, on and around loose rock. That is all taken care of when you get to the end and see the springs flowing from out of a rock. it was a pretty neat sight.

There was a little frost/snow on the ground which made the hike even better. Also, at the springs there were a bunch of fish in the water. (As opposed to being on the trail, I guess). We decided to eat lunch at the bottom of the springs with the fish in the water, the green moss growing on the banks of the creek, and the far bank of the creek covered in snow. This was my first hike in the Payson area, and it was an enjoyable one.

What an awesome hike. I started at about 7am and found a pack of javalena (8-9 of them) at the first wash by the trail head. I think we both startled each other. I did the hike counter clockwise, and strongly suggest it to first timers. you'll see why in a minute.

The trail was fine up to the pass part. I hate high places and walking on the edge of high places. however, the view up there was soooo worth buckling down and moving forward.

I stated that the trail was fine up to the pass. this was because once you get over the pass "Hold onto your horses." The view is breath taking. there is a constant shot of the four peaks off to the right, and what I believe to be the rim up near Pine. If ever I needed justification for hiking, and I don't, it is this view. it is not a gradual view either. you hit the Pass' zenith, and then "Hello", the valley opens before you like nothing I can describe.

the one and only drawback is that for 1/2 the hike there is the constant reminder of urban sprawl. Oh, but is that ever put aside by that view from the pass, and along the east and north side.

This is now one of my favorite hikes, and I will do it again.

This was harder than I thought it would be. Joe is right about the way out to hidden valley via the ridgeline. I back tracked about 5-6 times, only about 30-40 each time. when I took National trail to the end of Hidden valley, last time I went, it took 50 or so minutes to get out to the end. this way took me an hour and forty five minutes. I enjoyed the hike very much, and it is "NOT" used by many, which made it a quiet hike.

I climbed down into hidden valley a little soon, and then took it west to the end, where it meets back up with National trail. I then took National over to Mormon Loop and came back-in that way. All in all it was about 6 miles, with the added Mormon Loop.

for beginers to lower intermediates take this advice: PACE YOURSELF AT FIRST. i set off on my normal pace, and will not do that again. I only saw two bikers, and not too many others on the trails.

Joe was correct about looking for the Cairns. If you can't spot them, turn back. however, if you are even the least bit familiar with National trail, and you find yourself lost or off trail quite a bit, remember, Phoenix and National trail are to the North and Ahwatukee is to the South.

I used my Veteran's Day off to hike this trail. As with my past hikes, it seems to be overcast when I go lately.

With no kids in school, I think they were all screaming up this trail. There were adults present, just not many watching the kids. I met them all on the way back down. Now, I am ALL ABOUT having kids on the trail. I grew up hiking with my dad, and I learned sooooo much in doing so. I look at it like this (and this is purely sarcasm); some dogs need to be on leashes, and some don't, and the same goes for kids. Make your own judgement. This is probably why I am without kids at this point

This was a great "Wake Me Up" hike for the early morning. Some were jogging the trail as well.

Overall I enjoyed the views, especially that one to the west. It is of a brown film, and it looks as if there is a city of some sort under it. :(

I did not quite make the entire trip. I started at Pima trail head and followed National to Hidden Valley trail. I took that short trail until it met back up with National. I then started back, and on the way back in I took Mormon Loop Tail. All in all it was about 6 miles, give or take a little. I had nothing to gauge it by. I wanted to make the towers, but decided to turn back since i was going it alone. (or I was a wimp. You decide.) It was a beautiful morning, and the trail was not too busy at all. Not a single mountain bike. The next time i will make the towers

What an awesome day for a morning hike. it was about 70 degrees and overcast. I took the advice of one of the previous hikers and did this hike clockwise. Great advice. there were only about 10 others on the trail. the trail was easy to follow. I had wondered if my ailing knee could handle the hike and it did. the $5 entry fee was cheap in comparison to the million dollar morning I had. I did the hike solo, and it was a great move. A little too far to do again anytime soon, but I will do it again.

and as another had said in a previous summary, "Look out for the horse droppings!" they are everywhere. the mines were a nice added attraction if you have little ones who are curious.
