Started this 12 mile ride from the Baldwin Trailhead. First took the Verde Valley School Road and Bell Rock Blvd up to the Bell Rock trailhead near the Circle K. From here a short ride on Bell Rock Pathway to the Templeton Trail (comes up quick and easy to miss). Great section of the trail that has two tunnels under the roadway and beautiful views of Cathedral Rock along the way. Once you pass the Cathedral Rock hiking trail up to the saddle, you proceed down to Oak Creek after some nasty switchbacks. Take a left onto the Baldwin loop next to experience an 'amusing' section of challenging trail (made more so because you are tired from the first 11 miles!) and more great views of the back of Cathedral Rock. Ends back at the parking lot at the Baldwin Trailhead. My riding partner and I both thought this was an incredible ride and a new way to experience the awesome Sedona wilderness!

My Thanksgiving day tradition of hiking instead of over-eating continues in Tucson at Wasson Peak! Note, there is parking at the trailhead which differs from a few websites that mentioned parking at the Sonoran Desert Museum (which is nearby across the street). Trail was not crowded this turkey day and the views were awesome. Some interesting mines/cave openings on the mountain (guarded by barbwire fence). The grey clouds/skies of the early afternoon transformed to white/blue and one of the most beautiful sunsets these eyes have ever witnessed. Great hike recommended to all, be it holiday or just average ordinary day!!!

After nearly giving up on this hike after being turned away with a full parking lot - turned around and headed north a bit on 89A to find plenty of parking off the highway. Soooo glad we decided to do this! Fall colors were awesome and the hike itself was wonderful. Plenty of very easy creek crossings, nicely cushioned dirt powder trail, unlimited beautiful picture opportunities, and dozens of other friendly hikers all out experiencing the best Fall trail in Sedona. Everyone needs to put this one on the bucket list during the month of October!!

The hike that I bring anyone that is crazy enough to accept the challenge. This one will kick your butt, each and every time - but worth every ache and pain when you get to the top. The mountain will never look the same to you once you conquer it - and after getting another "my new favorite hike in the area" comment from a first timer, I feel I have done my job of sharing its magic to one more crazy hiker!

A warm day in the Valley called for a trip north to cool off. What better way to cool off than to go hiking followed by a swim in a crystal clear creek with a beautiful 20 foot waterfall!! My hiking friend and I set out early Sunday morning from Mesa and after a beautiful drive through Payson, Pine and Strawberry - hit the trailhead around 9:30. Walk down was met by many coming back up who camped the day before. When you reach the falls, I was surprised on how beautiful and big it was. After taking some pics, jumped in and began exploring the falls. Really cool cave/grotto underneath the falls!! Another cool area which requires a swim underwater through a submerged hole to reach a side area which had the water spinning within like a whirlpool! Tried to climb the rope out of the side hole - but neither my friend nor I could get a good traction, and after a brief period of panic just swam back the way we came in. After some sunning on a rock, we had lunch and then explored more before heading back out. The trip out was a hot, tiring and long - but occasional shade and a nice breeze helped us back. Stopped at the Strawberry Lodge for some after lunch lunch - very tasty burgers - highly recommended place to stop. All in all, a memorable hike for the two of us and one that EVERYONE who hikes in Arizona should check out!

Beautiful morning in my favorite place on the planet! Not many on the hike being Easter Sunday - but is there a more spiritual place to be??? Nice cloud cover and pleasant temps added to the experience, plus introducing a long time friend to this hike/area and meeting a new friend at the saddle - made for a special morning I will not soon forget!!!

Great day and a free afternoon called for a hike. Debated between doing the full Black Mesa loop or heading off trail to see how the waterfall looks in the winter. Decided to do the waterfall to escape the crowds, but of course no waterfall - but still a nice hike and some good exercise!

Decided to spend Thanksgiving with the spirits that inhabit the cliff dwellings in Rogers Canyon. Got a late start and did not get to the trailhead until 12:30. The long and winding road to the trailhead was clear of traffic, with only a few off to the side either camping, ATVing or shooting their firearms. Trailhead was empty, though a family pulled up after me and were headed to Reavis Ranch and not the cliff dwellings. Went on my way at a nice pace stopping only to wolf down some turkey and chips for lunch. Reached the dwellings at about 2:30. Note there is a path up to the dwellings at about the 3.9 mile mark from the trailhead, but I missed it on the way up, and made my own! Sure there was more in the higher cliffs to see, but time was not my friend and I was freakin out about getting back before dark. The fallen leaves made the trail difficult to follow, but only lost it a few times and got back to the car around 5:00 - having not seen a soul on the trails either way. Stopped at my parents house in Gold Canyon on the way home to get some real turkey and fixins! All in all, a far less traditional Thanksgiving, but one I won't soon forget!!

Beautiful day called for a little hiking. Headed out to the South Mountain region with a buddy and hiked the Mormon loop (parts of the National Trail, Mormon trail and then the Mormon loop). Very enjoyable fairly low effort hike with beautiful cloud cover stealing the show on this day.

Staying over in San Jose for two weeks, so took the opportunity to head over to Yosemite. My first choice, the Four Mile Trail, was closed half way - so based on a recommendation from a ranger did the Upper Yosemite Falls (and onward to the Yosemite Point). It was unseasonably cold in Yosemite, highs in the valley forecasted to 45. Bought some winter gear (gloves, cap, and raincoat) and was very glad I did! Parked very near the trailhead in Yosemite Lodge, no need for a shuttle. First part of the hike was exhausting, with many layers of clothing coming off on the way. At the falls, the clothes were being put back on, as the temps fell and the falls mist started to get me wet (and I was already quite wet from sweat!). Mid point of the hike leveled out a bit and you could catch your breath. The falls were beautiful from this vantage point! Continued the climb to the overlook. The overlook itself was so cold with the temps, wind, and mist - I had to many times turn my face from the wind to stop the burn. Took some nice shots of the falls and ice covered plants - climbed out to a warmer wind blocked area above and had a much needed lunch. Headed on to the point, about a mile from the falls on the opposite side of the climb up. Lots of snow here! Clouds and an impending snow shower blocked the views of the valley that would have been awesome. Headed down to face the aforementioned snow shower/storm - which made the granite rock path very slick, so it was slow going. Got to the car at five, exhausted as usual - but very happy to have been on another great hiking adventure!

Trailhead parking was full - so I turned around and parked in the overflow (no big deal as you start, but hate the additional mileage on the return!). My original plan was to hike the Black Mesa Loop, but changed my mind when I remembered this detour which takes you off trail as you test your balancing skills in a creek bed to a waterfall! Turned right at the seventh creek crossing off of Dutchman, stayed in the creek bed most of the time but still managed to get chewed on by the plant life when the rock path brought me to close to land. Didn't use any poles or a stick but still managed to stay dry both ways. Ran into a rattlesnake :o at one point, I didn't see it but it sure did see me - very loud rattle coming from the left of the creek bed. I quickly left him alone and in a short time made it to the waterfall. Climbed to the top, had some lunch, took some pictures and then continued the balancing act back to the trail and then the car (did I mention I hate having to walk to the overflow parking lot on the return!). I would recommend all to check this out when the water is running, very cool to see in the middle of the Superstitions!

Took a few co-workers on my favorite Superstition hike last week. My camera met an untimely death in Siphon Draw when it fell only about a foot out of my case onto the rocky basin - enough to crack the display, so no pics at the top. Still all had a great rewarding time the way that only flatiron can deliver.

A gorgeous Sunday in the desert called for a hike. Decided on the Praying Hands in the Sups for its close to home and easy to follow (or so I thought!). I managed to take the wrong trail right from the get-go at the Crosscut parking lot (you need to go right immediately after the first wash at the trailhead and not straight) and was rewarded with a bushwhacking off trail climb to the formations never even hitting the Treasure loop trail (righted my wrong on the return trip). Many people out with me on the trails (that is when I got back on the trails!) all enjoying a great winter day in the Superstitions.

A free afternoon and some interesting clouds called for a nearby hike and some pics. Usery's Windcave trail(and beyond to the summit) was today's choice. 102 degrees and some road repair in the park kept most away. For three hours the mountain was mine (spent over an hour on the top taking in the beauty) but did run into one other hiker on the way up as I was almost back to parking lot.

On the way to a Vegas weekend decided to stop over and get in a hike at the Canyon. From my researching, Grandview seemed like a good choice - great beauty, decent effort and far less people than Bright Angel. I was a bit concerned when I hit the trailhead and it was packed with cars and families. But less than a quarter mile down the trail the crowds disappeared and the canyon was all mine. Trail was in good shape for the most part, but once in the Coconino Sandstone - the trail was a bit steep and slick. Had one nasty fall as my feet came out from under me and cut up my forearm pretty good and had my right leg pinned underneath me at a potentially damaging angle. Lucky for me the knee held up fine without any pain or damage and I continued on to the mesa where the old mines are found. Here I did some exploring, had lunch and then began the very strenuous trek back out of the canyon. It took exactly double the time it did going down (as advertised) and was quite a workout - with many stops to catch my breath and take in the beauty (in that order!). Reached the top at around five where I was again joined by the many tourists. Good hike that I would recommend to anyone in shape - but do not underestimate the effort to climb out! Vegas was fun as always, but the timeless beauty of the Grand Canyon is truly magic (and I'm not talking the Sigfried and Roy variety!).

With the Valley experiencing 107 degree heat, thought it was good time to try and reach the much cooler summit of Brown's Peak. Last time I tried, my group only made the saddle - this time I was determined to reach the top. Forest Road 143 was as bumpy as I remembered, but this time with my Xterra vs. the rental car used last time - it was a breeze. Did not pass anyone on the way up and when I reached the parking area, I was the only one there. The trail up to the saddle was easy but a bit overgrown in places. Living in the Valley, seeing and smelling pine trees is a real treat. Beyond the saddle, the infamous scree chute awaits. Though you did need to watch your step, I never felt in danger - until you approach the summit and then you have one wall with real exposure. I actually thought about heading back, seeing I was alone - but hell, I made it this far so I went for it. One slip and I'd be in a world of hurt - but I managed to make it without incident. Funny, the one challenging wall/climb with Flatiron is also almost at the top - I guess its natures way of one final test to only let the truly determined pass! Once you reach the summit you are rewarded with great views in every direction and a true feeling of accomplishment. Stayed at the top for about 30 minutes - had my turkey sandwich and Coke, took lots of pictures, called my Dad and then headed down dreading that one scary section. It was actually much easier climbing down it than it was climbing up. Took my time getting back to the saddle and then pushed for the parking area. This is a hike I would recommend to all experienced hikers. I agree with a previous poster in that it is more technical than Flatiron, but much less physical. Once you reach the summit, you will never look at Four Peaks the same way again!

After booking a flight back to Fresno weeks previous for work and forgetting about the holiday, decided to make lemonade out of lemons. Sequoia National Park is a short drive from the airport in Fresno and I wanted to check out the area anyway, so after I landed at noon and checked into the hotel - I headed east to the Park. I was soon paying my $20 entry fee and heading to the nearest grove of monster Sequoia trees. That was about two miles after the pay station on Highway 180 at Grant's Grove. Here a very well laid out path system walks you through some of the biggest and most beautiful trees I have ever seen. Most are standing tall, a few have fallen - one which you can walk right through! Spent an hour here and then continued for about an additional hour down 180 through Kings Canyon. Beautiful scenery and a winding mountain road all added to the excitement and fun of getting to the trailhead. Once at the trailhead, it was already four o'clock and I knew I had at least nine miles to go round trip - so I quickly began my journey. Very well maintained trail and very easy on the legs (lots of sand, fallen needles and such making for a cushioned walk unlike the concrete like nature of most AZ trails). Passed many hikers coming off the trail, but I was the only one coming on at this time. Being an AZ hiker and not knowing exactly what to do if I came across a bear, I was a bit nervous - but I continued on. I reached the falls at about six. Signage warned of not going out onto the slippery rocks near the falls, but being very careful - I moved on out for pictures and some end of the trail introspection. After not taking what would have been my last waterslide ride - headed back to the trailhead - not passing anyone along the way, (or anything outside of a deer which bolted out in front of me - causing my heart to jump nearly as high as the deer!) I made it back to the car for a fun ride at dusk (no company on the roadways allowed me to do my best Speed Racer impersonation on the winding turns). All in all, I was very glad I made the mistake with my flight to have had a chance to experience this wonderful area and would recommend it to all.

Working in Fresno for the last five weeks, I knew I had to get over to Yosemite and see it for the first time. Left early on a Friday and got to the South gate in about an hour. Bit surprised to find that I still had another hour to go inside the park before I got to the trailhead! The hour went by quickly for the scenery was just beautiful. I stopped at least five times at different points taking pictures of all the waterfalls (which seemed to be everywhere). I have never seen waterfalls like this in my life, so I was a bit taken back by the beauty. I did finally get to the Curry Village parking lot, and after asking a few fellow hikers, discovered I needed to take a shuttle bus to the trailhead. Two stops later and a short walk over a stone bridge, and I was at the trailhead. It starts with a fairly steep paved path alongside the raging stream. You get your first glimpse of the Vernal Falls from a wooden bridge where you cross the stream. This is where it gets fun. Now after a short distance you are climbing a rock staircase carved into the right side of the falls, and you discover why it is called the Mist trail - for you get soaked! I was still taking pictures, which turned out to be a mistake, for I got water within the lens of my Koday point and shoot, and thought I was done for the day! Luckily once I topped out on the first falls, I opened the camera in the sun and it dried out in fifteen minutes and worked like a charm. Large fenced area at the top of Vernal falls for all the hikers (and cameras) to relax and dry off. You are right at the edge of the falls and the views are great, but the best is yet to come. Next up is Nevada falls, which is much taller and more powerful than its brother down stream. Just the sound of the thing was awesome, and the views were even better. Here you climbed on the left side to the top (crossing another wood bridge just after Vernal). No stone stairs here, more traditional trail and you do not get wet this time. At the top, another large flat and fenced area to take in the view and take pictures. Here I had my lunch and spent at least 45 minutes taking pictures and videos. Can't really explain how wonderful this area was, you really just need to try it yourself - which I would recommend all AZ hikers to do. Try to come in May for the falls are all at full strength. After another bridge crossing, you head down the John Muir trail to complete the loop. The views here are the best of the hike, for you are looking across at the falls and signature granite mountains of the park (Liberty Cap and Half Dome). I was very tired at the end of the hike, but so happy I had a chance to experience this. There are many other falls in the park to explore, but for me - I was done for the day - but I will soon be back to experience this natural wonder.

Took my second run at Battleship Mountain on a crisp clear Friday. Thankfully the primary lot had plenty of space (unlike the weekends when its packed). Made record time out to the Boulder Creek and then rock hopped most of the way to what seemed like a reasonable way up the first mountain. I missed any defined path on the ascent (did find one on the way down though), with only a few scratches and thankfully no run in with snakes. After lunch on a nice flat rock near the top, I tried to find the way up to the peak. After some head scratching, I climbed some brittle rock which would have put me in a world of pain if it would have broken. Thankfully no broken rock, or bones! The top was flat with great views. I gave some serious thought about continuing on to the actual battleship, but from my perspective I could not see a good way to get there and it was already after three - so rather than tempt fate, I headed back. After nine miles my usual pains in my back, knees and ankles kicked in, - no record setting on the return. Made it back to the car around five thirty with a pack of scouts in the lot ready to begin an overnight. Though I did not make it to my end goal (I'll get it next time), had a great time on a great hike.

After hiking the day before at the West Fork of Oak Creek and Cathedral Rock, it was time for the main event - Bear Mountain. After a good night sleep and a nice breakfast (stayed at a B&B called 'The Graham Bed and Breakfast Inn' which I highly recommend), headed to the trailhead and arrived at around nine. The construction traffic seems to be getting worse vs. better in Sedona, so plan accordingly. The weather was cool with high cloud cover, but the very windy conditions made it feel much colder, especially at the summit. I can always spot winter visitors to Arizona, in that regardless of the weather they are wearing shorts and t-shirts - and there were a number of visitors on the hike - shaking in their sandals. The hike itself was tough with a lot of climbing, but the most beautiful yet of my Sedona hikes. The scenery/geology was amazing and I would highly recommend this to anyone who is in hiking shape. This is a hike not to be missed!!!!!!!!!!!!
