so much drama in this piece. And, of course, to see the piece better, click on ORIGINAL:
Way of St. James. Altarpiece of the Souls. Saint John of Ortega.
This altarpiece of the Souls of Purgatory or the Final Judgement, in the church of San Juan de Ortega, is a work dating from the mid-16th century.
It shows naked figures with their hands on their heads and laments of pain and supplication.
At the bottom is represented hell with the souls condemned for their sins (There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth)
In the middle, those in purgatory in a transitory state, condemned purging their lesser sins.
The twelve apostles are represented at the top escorting the Virgin and Child, who intercede for the damned souls.
Above, the resurrected Christ, surrounded by four cherubs.
