Walking back to the hotel via the Plaza. We saw many plazas. I wonder why we don't have more of them in the USA.
Formerly Plaza del Sarmental and Plaza del Duque de la Victoria.
It is dedicated to Fernando III the Saint (1199-1252), under whose protection the cathedral was built from 1221.
It was formerly called Plaza del Sarmental because the cathedral doorway opened onto it.
In the 19th century it was called Plaza del Duque de la Victoria in honour of General Espartero.
