A mile in on Cherry Creek road a Bell 206 L model flies over the road at 100' orbits and parallels me. So I stop and assume he is trying to get my attention. He comes in and lands and shuts down. Talk to him briefly and he is waiting for a work crew. I gather as I leave and see numerous utility crews that they are probably working on the transmission lines. Fr203 is not too bad through Devil's Chasm crossing. The next wash out however required some temporary road work by me in order to get back after trying to take my tow hitch and other parts on the way in. Thank goodness for full skid plates! My original plan was to drive past pottery point and do some hiking exploring in an area I had not hiked. I got about 4-5 miles past pottery point and I'll admit that almost every crossing or area where the road was washed out had a certain pucker factor I have a Frontier quad cab with a pretty short wheelbase and had difficulty. I ended up turning around and going to plan B when I spotted a road grater up the road and it was apparent that I would not be able to get around him and my turn around spots were limited. Hopefully they will be doing road work and clearing boulders as the road was about as bad as I have seen it. I parked at pottery point and started the hike. Work and now unexpected other issues have conspired to ruin summer hiking plans so I really wanted to get some miles on the legs. I felt sluggish probably because I didn't start the hike until 10am after backtracking back to pottery point. I was surprised to catch my first view of the Ruins 30 minutes into the hike I guess my memory is fading, because I thought the hike was longer. I decided to hike past the turn off and follow the trail to where it faded. I then spent 1 1/2 hours hiking up a canyon with running water and clear pools. So relaxing and the shade and breeze was nice as well. I found a lunch spot and ate something other than chicken from a bag. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePGPYbzbrbE Hiked back to the turn off and went up to the main dwellings. Renewed and full of energy from lunch against my better judgment I then followed a faint trail hugging the base of the cliff up the canyon. There were two more rooms. One was just a pile of rocks and one partial room. I continued up the canyon for another hour leaving skin with every step and getting offtrail hiking out of my system for the rest of the summer. Learning curve on the new gps precluded me actually getting an accurate mileage for the entire hike which is why I posted it under Cold Springs. I spent 3.5 hours exploring the canyon and bushwacking past the dwellings. Past Ellison Ranch on the drive out I noticed a haze towards northwest which turned out to be a fire. There was another fire in the mountains around Miami. |
