| no partners | | Did this hike on Tuesday (1/11/11), but didn't have a chance to post a report until tonight. Left Mesa/Tempe about 6 am, made a pit stop in Globe and got to the trailhead around 9 am. Cherry Creek Road is in excellent shape up to Ellison Ranch. After that it hasn't had any maintenance at least since just before Thanksgiving when we did Devil's Chasm. There are quite a few new rocks that have rolled down the hills onto the road, but none that should cause any problems UNLESS you have normal street tires - some of the rocks looked sharp and could possibly puncture regular tires - and low clearance. You will need high clearance in some spots. I'm glad I had 4WL to pull up out of Devil's Chasm creek, which had a lining of slick dead leaves on the bottom.
The trail itself is not too bad, although there was up to about 2" of snow in areas that don't get much direct sunlight. Randall's gps track keep us on the trail just fine. The climb up the side of the canyon was not nearly as bad as the climb up Devil's Chasm, and the ground was moist which kept the dust at a minimum. Remember you will go to the right of the rock outcropping marking the rightmost edge of the "punch bowl," and then skirt the top of the bowl, then follow the edge of the rock cliffs to the ruins. |
