| partners | | I did this hike with my friend Steve and Jennifer, who is a HAZ newbie. We got started at about 7:30am, and it was pretty cold at the TH. Once we got moving up the trail, we quickly warmed up.
The scree chute I think is misnamed and should be named the rip-rap chute. It's still pretty challenging getting up even though I've done this a couple times. I always seem to remember this as very easy until I'm back there looking up. The bottom part of the chute seems to have the loosest rocks where you have to watch out for kicking rocks on the people below you. There was one spot where Jennifer was almost about to chicken out where you get to the two very vertical spots and some minor exposure, but she made her way thru it.
Once we got to the top, the views were phenomenal, as always (if the weather is clear). Humphrey's Peak was visible from the top. Surprisingly, there wasn't much of a breeze at all at first, which made it very pleasant. After about 15 min. (once we cooled off), then the breezes started and then it got a little chilly again. There was a Maricopa County SAR helicopter buzzing below us, and then he got up and buzzes the peak, circling us about 3 times. After that, they went down to Brown's Saddle and dropped off 2 searchers, who rappelled from the helicopter as it hovered over the saddle. Lots of activity going on, but we were a few steps behind, just missing anyone who we could ask what was happening.

Very nice hike, even though I've done this before, it was nice to go back and do it again to finally get some nice 360 views with clear weather. I looked over at Peak 2 to try to decipher the route there for a Motherlode hike. Maybe one day... |
