| partners | | I try to summit Brown's at least once or twice every year. Last year I climbed too early in the year and everything looked so barren so this year I waited a few months longer.
My hiking buddy was a bit apprehensive since it would be her first time. It didn't help matters when we came upon a rock with plenty of dried blood on it. (At that point I recalled hearing about a fatality less than a month before) As we continued up the chute we encountered many more bloodied rocks, making it appear the hiker had tumbled for as much as 200'.
When we got within a few hundred feet of the summit, at a point where a little bit of climbing & good balance was required, my buddy was ready to say enough! After some gentle coaxing (Come on now, we've come this far, you can't turn back now! You'll wish you stuck with it!) she dropped her pack and very carefully continued the climb. Upon reaching the summit and taking in the awesome panorama, she admitted it was well worth the climb. On the hike back we took a few trips off trail for curiosity sake.
It wasn't until I got home before I realized I had been so focused on coaxing, cajoling and hand-holding my buddy on the climb I hardly took any photos, which you can see here: http://www.changephoenix.com/10/2010-06-05BrownsPeak.html |
