| no partners | | I was told a few years back by a friend that there were a few metates on top of this peak and today I decided to check it out. I was flat blown away with what I found on top! I started from Jacobson Canyon and followed the "flume trail" down to Goat tank and then up & across the top of the first mesa to Lefthand Canyon. From here it was a tricky loose rock slide down into the canyon and a good uphill climb to the top of Metate Peak. I was very surprized to find a register on top buried under a small rock pile placed there last year. 20 yards along the top of the peak and I found the first metate, another few steps and I found another and another and.......etc. I walked the entire football field sized top and counted over 30 seperate metates/grinding holes (mostly grinding holes) and am sure there were at least 30 more under brush that I could not see. I have never seen anything like this before and I have been to a LOT of sites in this county! I returned back the way I came stopping for a rest at John's dam before returning back up to my truck. |
