For me that time had come to try and tackle this one that I had only heard of previously by some of the hikers I respect most. Many would not do it in the middle of Summer but I hate the cold so warmer is better than colder for me. I have been watching the weather in Palm Springs for the last 3 weeks and today was the day! High of 100 and low of 70. Started out at 4AM and hit the Tram/Ranger station in Long Valley in just under 5 hours. I will say that the last half mile or so beat me down hard. 10 miles and 8000 plus feet of gain was taking it's toll.
Saving grace is that the hard part is now over per everything I have read. Semi-true. There is still 2400 feet of gain to go and 11 more miles! Going on a couple hours of sleep and then doing this much incline this fast had me questioning what I had gotten myself into.
Did the Ranger Station Wilderness Pass thing and on I went. It was a slow go up to Round Valley and a short way beyond and then it started to get better. I got a second wind and was really enjoying the trail and the AMAZING views along the way. Once up close to the Peak I saw the cabin and had to go check it out. Wow how cool! Great history on this and once I opened the door and saw the bunks with sleeping bags I thought to myself... Hmmmm. Naw I would sleep the rest of the day and the whole night through. I didn't use my energy bar that I had in my pack so I left it in the cabin for someone else in possible need. The Peak was fantastic and I sat up top for a bit and thought how little I felt in the grand scheme of things. I could see for miles and the temps were just right.
The real challenge of this hike is from mile one to mile ten. The real beauty of it is from mile 11 to 15.5. Combine the two and you have an amazing day to say the least. |
