I hiked Cactus to Clouds exactly a year and a day ago. My original plan for today was to go to the Grand Canyon and do a Rim to Rim but things didn't pan out. Back up plan came into play late yesterday afternoon. I don't really know what got me thinking about it but I left town around 7pm. Arrived at Palm Springs around midnight, asleep around 1am and up at 3:45. I showered up and headed out and by was on the trail right at 4:30am. A car had just dropped off 3 other crazies and they were heading up the hill ahead of me.

I started my way up and it was like deja vu. After a good 15 or 20 minutes into the hike I caught up to the other hikers and asked them if they were going to the top. They said hopefully. I never saw them again. :o Maybe they just went to the tram station or maybe somehow they ended up on the wrong peak. ;)

When doing this hike in July you are racing against the sun as you climb up and out of the heat. Today was much more humid than last year but otherwise fine. I reached Long Valley without a hitch (except a slow go the last mile or so) in just over 4 hours. Then to the Ranger Station to fill out the permit.

One thing I noticed this year vs last is the number of people up around the area hiking. There were tons of them. Last year only a few. Anyway I managed to make it to the top in under 6 hours total. Time for a pepperoni stick and back down. I hit the tram station in a total of 7 hours and 41 minutes. I was thrilled with this and was ahead of schedule.

This is where I made a mistake. I figured why not just hike it back down since I was early and feeling great. Going down that 10 mile steep hill is no bueno! It was like hiking with my brakes on the whole time and in the end my toes and knees were not happy. The good news is they will get over it. Lesson learned. Stick to the tram for the ride down.

On a 1 to 10 I would rate this hike as a solid 9.5 or even a 10 minus that hike down. It is simply AMAZING! It will also put the hurts on you but the reward is worth the effort. Just FANTASTIC!
