Tyler and I got up early Saturday morning to high-tail it to the backcountry office and get a good group site for the Kolob Arch backpack on Sunday. The bonus was getting to see a great sunrise as we drove into Zion. We got our permit and then headed in to Springdale to get some yummy breakfast at Cafe Soleil, which is just inside town. Then we headed to Watchman Campground to set up camp and wait for the rest of the crew to meet us. Once everyone got there, the group went in separate directions as suited interestes. We ended up deciding to join the crew heading to Angel's Landing.
This was a fun dayhike up lots of crazy switchbacks and along a narrow ridgeline. Actually ended up moving faster than I thought I would, and the scramble along the ridgeline was good fun. There were lots of people to dodge around, though. The temps were perfect for a hike with fast elevation gain. I was surprised to see that the trail was 100% paved up until the ridgeline. I guess with the constant use it is necessary. The views were absolutely worth the climb. We sat and had our lunch and then headed back down to Watchman Campground to catch the fading light on the surrounding formations. Great hike! |
