| no partners | | I ended up with Saturday open. It's all part of my ever-changing schedule. My Grand Canyon pass expires this month so one more hike with a canyon newbie was the plan. We left Mesa at 4a and after driving through the smoke arrived at the south rim at 8a. We were 5 minutes too late for the hikers express so we parked at the visitors center and rode the orange (east bound) bus to S Kaibab trail. The weather was still cool and after making our way past the Amish tourists we started down. We hike with a Japanese tour group for a while and after about a mile made it past to the average joe hikers. The trip down S Kaibab was shaded 70% of the way and easy going. The smoke from the burn obscured the views but created a different look. The smoke cleared out later in the day. As we approached the Colorado River we saw 4 Amish men hiking up the trail. We talked with them a short time and found out they were visiting from Kansas. After about 3 hours we arrived a Phantom Ranch and filled up with water and ate lunch. We left PR about 12p and started up Bright Angel trail. The hike out was the 3 stop plan. 1st rest Indian Gardens, 2nd rest 3 mile house and 3rd rest 1.5 mile house. I thought we were in for some hot hiking but we had 50% shade until 2p and after 2p the sun was below the rim until we topped out just before 4:30p. We stopped for diner at Bright Angel Lodge and hit the road for home. |
