I met Kyle (Tough Boots) down at Phantom Ranch. He was with a party doing a R2R starting on the North Side. He told me a few days earlier he still had a permit available and I felt the canyon calling...again! This would be my third trip to the big ditch in 5 weeks!

I drove up on Friday night after work and slept in my jeep on the south rim. Temps got down into the twenties! I woke early on Saturday and picked up the Kaibab Express Shuttle at 8am. I was hiking by 8:30 and enjoyed the cool temps. It was a smooth and enjoyable hike all the way. I arrived at Phantom Ranch around 11:30 and relaxed until Kyle and his party arrived. It was great seeing a familiar face so far from home.

We set up camp over in Bright Angel Campground. We then went for a day hike up to the CCC bench on the Clear Creek Trail. From there we headed to the Colorado and made the River Trail loop. This was some enjoyable and easy hiking. After dinner, we went to the amphitheater for a ranger program about the early river runners. After that we grabbed some beers in the Canteena. I swear Phantom Ranch is luxury camping! The bathrooms with flush toilets and running water were a nice treat! Also, there were several places to get drinking water.

I woke on Sunday morning and had some tea and breakfast. From there I packed up my gear and started getting amped for the hike out. I said goodbye to Kyle and everyone (they were spending another night at Indian Garden) and hit the Bright Angel Trail. I made fast progress as I ascended up. I ate on the go and cruised right by Indian Garden. Before long I was back at the rim and on my way back to Phoenix. I love these spur of moment weekend getaways!

Thanks to Kyle and Rachel for letting me tag along for a night. They had a great group and I had a ton of fun!
