I always wanted to venture up Deering canyon and see what stuff was left behind. We decided on the Marsh Valley Loop and added some mandatory side trips for fun, adventure and pain. We started out about 7a. The sun wasn't up but it was light enough to hike and warmer than mornings earlier in the week. The original plan was to take Bull Pass but we started talking about the crested saguro located off the Dutchman trail and realized none of us had seen it so a reroute was in order. We found the saguro and I mentioned the mine at the base of Black Top Mesa. That was for another trip since we had a lot of groud to cover. As we aproached the intersection of Cavalry trail you could see triangle cave and though that may be a possible detour on the way down. On Cavalry trail we ran into a random hiker who started the same time as us and then Tough Boots. We talked with Kyle a few minutes before we went off trail up Deering canyon. The brush was thick but we sqeezed through. The boudlers were a lttile more difficult but we manged to make it up to the large chok stone that maybe passable. There was a notice under the boulder (fake?) but the TV sized rocks under the boulder looked iffy. It took us 127 seconds to decide it wasn't worth being crushed and we decided to loop back toward Squaw Canyon via the shelf above Cavalry trail. We found some rock monuments, tin cans, a coleman stove and items along the way. We stopped to eat near Squaw Canyon and decided to skip trinagle cave since we were pretty far below it and have some other detours in mind in La Barge Canyon. On the trip back through Boulder trail we croseed over into La Barge creek (near Battleship) and checked out the box. Dave hadn't seen the curiosities but the cave with the cross, Aylor's ruins and the Indian Paint mine were all on the way. Dave decided to take a detour off Second Water trail after we found him we continued to the ruins in Garden Valley and made back to First Water TH while it was still light. There was a lot of water along the way but the creek crossings were easy. Thanks Denny & Dave for venturing off trail to look for new stuff.
