| no partners | | Another great trip out to Gila Box this time down to Bonita Creek to get a few more miles explored in the canyon. Dropped down from Bonita Creek Rd and followed the creek along the big water pipeline and city service dirt road that runs through the canyon (the city of Safford gets it's water from this creek). I made my way upstream for 3.5 miles stopping at a couple of historic sites and had to make 14 creek crossings along the way. This stretch of Bonita Creek reminds me a lot of the first 2 miles into Aravaipa Canyon from the East entrance, it was very nice and I will definitely be back to hike this section next autumn for the colors! I made the end of the pipeline my destination for the day and from there I climbed up and out of the canyon to meet Bonita Rim/Solomon Pass Rd on top and took it back to where I began completing a nice loop.
Highlight of the day was hearing many crunching leaves coming up the creek and knowing what it was and having my camera ready. I dropped to my knees and stood still for a few minutes as a mother coatimundi with 6 young walked 20 feet in front of me. I watched them for a few minutes before being spotted and was able to get a couple of good pics before they took off in all directions! |
