I made it up to the mine in no time and spent about 20 minutes exploring the small site before heading back. Sat on an overlook before crossing back over Stockton Wash and glassed for a bit spotted some big dark boulders to the south that I thought could hold petroglyphs. Made my way off-trail through a thick prickly pear forest down to the boulders and POW! ....... Petroglyphs on almost every boulder! The Safford basin in not known to have many of these petroglyph sites and I doubt many have seen these. I then followed the ridge along the wash now looking for the habitation sites that I thought must be nearby and think I may have found a large Hohokam community site! Light was now starting to get low so I returned back to the ranch now knowing that a return trip will be made very soon to explore more of these most unexpected finds!!! |
