| no partners | | | After my many trips out to the Marijilda District, I believe I have now found most of the prehistoric sites within that area so today I decided to move on and start exploring the Oak Draw area 10 miles to the south. The Oak Draw area, like Marijilda, has been put on the National Register of Historic Places (1992) due to the numerous prehistoric sites (Hohokam & Mogollon) within the draw. This area is much bigger than Marijilda (9650 acres) and is going to take me many trips to cover, Trip #1 - Started down FR #661 just off Stockton Pass Rd and then off-trail following washes, cattle trails, open desert & power line service roads with a couple of small peaks climbed along the way. This trip produced no habitation sites, but I did find a nice small tool production site above a wash that contained many flakes with 2 unfinished arrowheads! Also spotted along the hike were a few pottery sherds, a small piece of a shell bracelet and a few boulder grinding holes. After looping back around to Stockton Pass Rd, I spent about an hour climbing through & around the amazing boulder formations that included several balanced rocks & arches. Wildlife spotted today was 2 white-tail does, 2 red-tailed hawks & lots of cattle including about 1,000,000 of there pies that lie throughout this entire area. On the drive out I stopped and talked with an "old timer" as he was heading in with a truck full of 8 coon hounds hunting for a mountain lion that he had spotted in the area the day before. I just love this area and look forward to my next adventure in the draw!!! |
