I hit it up from the bottom and made my way up to the half way point on the switchbacks ending with a short off-trail bushwack to a great overlook of the Ft Grant prison & Sulphur Springs valley below. This trail had everything I love in a hike including a strong flowing creek with many small waterfalls that flows through a nice riparian area full of oak, alder, juniper & sycamore. There were a few old structures & pumphouses along the way before the switchbacks took me up into the Pinaleno pines with some great views of the huge granite canyon cliffs and even a few hedgehog cactus at the 7500 ft level. There are a few really nice camping spots on the lower trail and I will definitely be back to camp overnight here in the early summer or autumn to see the foliage which was not at it's best on this winter trip. Wildlife spotted today was a white-tail buck on the drive in just before the prison and 5 coatimundis along the creek just before the switchbacks. I have now seen coatis on the north, south & eastern Pinaleno trails (total of 24 this year) and now just expect to see them on all my Graham hikes! |
