| partners | | on a rare friday off, i once again contacted my friend randy for a day of hiking and exploring. he suggested picketpost, and, since i hadn't done that one this year, i accepted.
apparently he had something else in mind. yes, we did go to the picketpost trailhead - but just to use their facilities. then our journey took off into something completely different. we started by driving around picketpost, in search of a mine and a pond. we didn't find either, but we did find a great spot for camping, and miles of roads to explore when we have more time.
today was for the white canyon wilderness. randy didn't think that i had been to the area, but it turned out that i had been there, before i started posting my hikes on haz. we stopped by the "real" white canyon wilderness trailhead before heading to the next canyon over, which was what randy had in mind for us to hike and explore. it was interesting to see my entry at the blm sign-in box at that other trailhead - vaporman had been the very next visitor.
the hike itself followed an old jeep road for the majority of its alignment, but i was quick to forgive that flaw since the wildflowers were so abundant. on our way back, we attempted to follow the canyon drainage, but we ended up cliffing out.
we ended the day with a trek on the florence-kelvin highway, and an unplanned jaunt which almost brought us to the cochran coke ovens in the dark. we had dinner at l&b inn in florence, which will not be getting a good review from me. the chili relleno plate had a cheese enchilada served with it that contained pork. and the "relleno" itself did not appear to be cooked or breaded and fried.
the bleh dinner couldn't ruin my day, though. thank you, randy, for an unexpectedly brilliant day. |
