The fire certainly took a heavy toll but there is still plenty of beauty on this hike. The two meadows are amazing. I saw two Elk drinking some water but they took off before I could snap a good picture. Then down by the river would make a great place to spend a whole afternoon. I took off my shoes and socks and waded across to see what the other trail signs said. Holy cold batman! After that I headed back to the Jeep for a little lunch and then off to do Indian Springs. There is actually a connector trail from the West Fork Trailhead! Bonus!
Side note: As of today Roads 261 and 273 are still closed for winter. I would imagine they will be open soon as there isn't much snow on the ground.
Personally, I like to stay in Alpine at the Escudilla Mountain Cabins when in the area. There is a road to Big Lake just up the way and it was easily passable by any car. The road is 249.
It also appears by the triplogs that they must have opened the trail last year at the beginning of September. I was the first one to log for 2012. |
