| no partners | | This is an easy and scenic hike, and I decided to do this hike again before heading back to the VOS.
It was a cold start to the hike: at 7:00 AM my car registered 22 degrees and someone who I was with had 16 degrees. It warmed up fairly fast though -- by mid morning I would have been ok wearing a t-shirt and shorts.
The water flow in the West Fork of the Black River was much less than what it was when I did this hike back in June. That made the hike a bit less interesting, but we were able to cross the river at Deadman Crossing without getting our feet wet.
We started the hike at the Thompson Trail TH, and took the Thompson Trail for about 2.5 miles to Deadman Crossing; then walked across the West Fork of the Black River on a couple of logs; and then followed the West Fork Trail for about 2.5 miles to the West Fork TH; then we reversed course and went back to the starting point. The Thompson Trail goes alongside the river and is relatively flat. There is a bit of elevation gain on the West Fork Trail, but not too much.
There were quite a few yellow aspen leaves, but in another week the explosion of yellow aspens will be much better.
We saw a few deer on the West Fork Trail near Neck Tank, and on the way back we saw a tarantula on the trail. |

Autumn Foliage Observation Moderate There were quite a few yellow aspen leaves for your viewing pleasure; however, in another week there will be even more |
