Pam and I have been planning a shuttle hike from Canyon to First Water or the other way around for some time. Recently she did Battleship and told me we are going to do La Barge box because it looked amazing from the top of Battleship. So I said okay lets go.
We met along the Apache Trail and Pam followed me up to canyon so we could drop my car off and then drove back down to First Water TH to start the hike. We hit the trial right around 0730 1430Z and headed off at a quick pace covering the trail to where it hits Boulder. Pam pointed a cave out to me up on Battleship that she relaxed in on her last hike and said it was an easy climb from this side to check out. So I followed her up and after some mild bushwacking we made it up to the cave. As promised it was worth the climb the views were awesome the cave was cool and shady. I got some great pics. Good job pam
After relaxing up at the cave for about 30 min we did the climb back down to the trail leading down to La Barge, as we assended the water came into view along with the entrance to the box. The water was clear and inviting and loaded with Minnows per the fisherman. We scaled some rocks and continued into the box past the first 2 large pools. The canyon is a camera magnet I could not help but fire off pics like crazy. We got further up and the canyon where it is blocked with boulders. There were 2 really good ways to get to the other side I decided to wade and went a@$ over teakettle and got wet. Mind you I have listened to Pam tell me on the last 2 trips how much she wants a swimming hike and I end up being the first one in the drink. Pam thought that was great but I would have my revenge later....
So after exploring up the canyon some more we decided to head back to the level area and find some shade eat lunch and maybe voluntarly do some swimming. After we ate Lunch Pam decided she wanted to test the water out. What Pam found out very quickly was the deep portion of the pool was really cold. I did not have my camera ready to capture the moment but I assure you it was pricless and I think the people at Canyon lake may have heard her shock
After the cool off and Pam feeding the minows we headed toward canyon and began our bouldering adventure. Battleship provided some shade for the first 1/3 of the trip out of La Barge later the sun and afternoon heat came out and it got warm. We reached the first major climb out of the canyon on the boulder trail. The first assent is the hardest and in the direct sun at that time of day it made for some work. When we finally made it to the top we were both bushed. We took about a 10 min break in the shade and continued on to Canyon Lake.
This was such a great hike my hat is off to Pam she planned it all out and I just followed on this one. Looking forward to our next adventure Pam.
Large pools in the box water flowing and clear in the box canyon on the way to canyon lake the water comes and goes it flows out of the ground and creats large pools and then disappears again. The water disappears completely about where the Boulder Trail crossed the creek.
