| partners | | john knew i've been wanting to hike battleship mountain, so he graciously agreed to do it again, on an nfl playoff day, no less
started from first water trailhead and cruised through garden valley
kind of a rocky descent down to boulder canyon, but not too bad
crossed the creek several times and boulder hopped on boulder canyon trail
john's knowledge of the route was invaluable, as he knew where to cut up to battleship
before our ascent, we went over the saddle and down to la barge box
that place is incredible!
some water flowing, with several pools
we went to the part where it gets more demanding, and scrambled along and through some of the giant boulders
didn't go far, but far enough to know that we both want to explore further, perhaps to the junction with cavalry
on the way back, on the sharply angled rock above the water level, yes, my foot slipped and i fell in about to my waist
kind of a shock, to say the least, and could have really put a damper on the hike if it had been colder or windy
as it was, we just kept moving out of the box, back up to the saddle and on to the approach to battleship
by the time we got to the top, i was dry
again, john's previous experience on the battleship was put to use and we scrambled up with a couple of backtracks
didn't find the narrow parts nerve-wracking, but executed a couple of butt scoots
there were three spots that seemed like class four climbs to me, but they were quite short
the summit was spectacular
we took out my map to try to identify some landmarks and had a snack
checked out the pink ammo can and register
headed back down and that went a lot quicker
then back the same way
didn't see anyone aside from second water trail
i loved everything about this hike: views, weather, scrambling, route-finding, boulder hopping, a couple of good uphills, the box, the peak and the company
would do it again in a heartbeat, but would start at canyon lake trailhead
another great day in the supes - thanks, john |
