the three of us were going to hike brown's peak today, but given the cold front that went through over the weekend, thought we could find a better day for that
battleship had been on angela's wish list, and i wanted to do it again, so we developed plan B: battleship and the box starting from canyon lake
sunday was an absolutely perfect day for hiking in the supes and we were all surprised at how few people we saw
took off a little after 8:00 and headed up boulder canyon trail
warmed up quickly and got to carry the extra layers i thought i needed
the canyon lake approach is a nice option to first water - more scenic and i like boulder canyon trail better than second water
the view when you hit the overlook about a mile or so in is breathtaking
hit the intersection with second water and continued on down boulder canyon
took a slightly off-trail approach up to battleship, as i was following a different track than last time, and really didn't remember from last time
should have deferred to angela's research, but we made it to the alcove and took a snack break
the climb up the ship was a blast
got to work on my route-finding skills, as last time i was mostly just following johnlp
johnr1 had been up twice and he knew the route pretty well
angela was successful in climbing, scrambling and negotiating the route for the first time! : app :
had lunch up top and enjoyed the magnificent views and perfect weather
down is always easier, and we all made the difficult downclimbs with no problem
since you're right there once you hit the saddle, we headed down to labarge box, following the nicely cairned path
spent some time just wandering around exploring
first time to the box for john - won't be the last for any of us
took the boulder hop down labarge creek on the way back
i really enjoyed this section
the creek had intermittent flowing water, and it was cool being below battleship
would have been fun to follow the creek all the way back, but didn't have the time or knowledge to execute that option
took a short break before starting the climb out on boulder canyon trail, then just kept a steady pace up as we watched the sun set on geronimo head and the other landmarks
dusk then dark, and finally had to take out the headlamps at the overlook
i've always been leery of hiking at night, but i had great company, and it was actually pretty fun
no problem following the trail, and when we turned our headlamps off, the stars were incredible
we all got to the marina safely and i thoroughly enjoyed the day with angela and john
just felt bad that they both had to work today
my track won't sync, but the mileage seems accurate; estimating the elevation
