| no partners | | east end is another high point i've been wanting to hit
it's never referred to as east end peak or summit, just east end
it's the highest point in the mcdowell mountains at 4059'
the easy way:
drove to the north trailhead of tom's thumb trail
on the way i saw a lot of bunnies and one limping coyote
wasn't quick enough for a picture
the city of scottsdale is in the process of constructing a new trailhead facility for the north access to hiking and climbing
no one else at the trailhead at 6:00 a.m.
found some hiking poles in the parking lot - let me know if you're missing some
headed up the trail and enjoyed the ascent and the views
lots of cool looking boulders up here
hit the intersection with east end trail
my gps showed 1.33 miles, not the 1.5 stated on the sign
the hard way:
there's a use trail heading to the east from the intersection
after passing a beer bottle and skoal can, it fades out
so i scrambled up boulders and bushwhacked through sticker bushes and cactus
had to backtrack a couple times to find the best route, going up things that i knew would be difficult to come down, just hoping i would find an easier descent
thought about bailing, but could see i was making progress
finally topped out and spent a few minutes checking out the incredible views (although hazy), signing the register (last person 4-22, dave was that you? patrick, scott, didn't see your signature), and taking a water break
would have wandered around some, but the gnats were annoying
the easy way:
just to the north of the solar panel contraption, there's an obvious trail with a few cairns leading down a scree covered path
no climbing, no boulder hopping, just a steep slide back to the trail
the actual start of the trail up is in a little saddle just north of the intersection
i believe those are the coordinates that patrick posted
simple - no route finding and makes this (peak? summit? high point?) quite doable
the entire hike is no more than 3.5 miles and around 1200 aeg
i must have forgot to turn on the tracking for my gps, so just downsized the mileage on my odometer a bit
i did a little bit "extra" so my posted figures are higher
wish i had a good track to post
definitely got to work on my scrambling skills this morning |
