| partners | | After fishing and camping at Bear Canyon Lake on Saturday, we drove over to hike this trail today. To hit a good distance for an out and back hike, we started at the trail's crossing of FR 139A and hiked north to Pinchot Cabin, then back. As soon as we reached the first spring ("Houston Draw Head") along the trail, there was water flowing down the draw most of the way, with a dry spot for a ways just above the Pinchot Springs. There were plenty of flowers for cindyl to take pictures of, so we took our time along the way, stopping to look for a few survey monuments along the route. We came up empty on the monuments themselves, but I did find blazed and scribed bearing tree accessories for two of them.
We enjoyed seeing the cabins at Aspen Spring and the Pinchot site. Domestic Irises around the chimney at Aspen Spring are in full bloom, and we spotted a couple red Columbine growing out of the rocks at the spring there. We took a break at the Pinchot Cabin before turning around and heading back the way we came. By the time we reached the truck it had gotten pretty warm out, though not nearly as hot as it was down in the Valley.
We took the long way around going out, driving north up FRs 139 and 95 to stop at Moqui Fire Lookout Tower on our way out to the Highway. We had a great visit there with the longtime lookout (on her last day in this tower before starting a two month assignment in the Blue Ridge Ranger Station) before heading home. |
