Liz and Larry and I decided the 20-mile cabin loop was a little too much, and opted to shuttle our way to about the half-way point at Pinchot Cabin, and hike back. In retrospect, the better option would have been to shuttle the car there, and drive back and hike from Buck Springs to Pinchot. That would leave the nice Houston Draw for the last few miles and make it easier at the end. Oh well.

We started at 11:30, and quickly made it up to Aspen Springs where a family or two were taking a break on Paige's Crossing. Since it's only 1.5 miles to there, we didn't really take a break, and continued up to McFarland Spring where we met Joe, Bruce, and Corey. I told Corey that the sheriff had been by looking for him, and was happy he didn't get scared, pull out a gun and kill us all now that we knew his secret. ;)

We plucked along until the trail climbs out of Houston Draw and dips unnecessarily into 4 or 5 drainages just a few yards from the ridge that FR321 is on. I'm happy to be away from the road, but the stupid added AEG of going up and down little canyons that could bypassed was irritating me a little bit!

We took a break for hydration and some snacks before making the turn onto Barbershop and proceeding down to the spring. Liz caught a horned toad and a butterfly along the way, and started to have some blister problems in her sandals. A little tape, and lunch at the bottom of Barbershop canyon made all things better.

Some campers had set up a pop-up and a toy-hauler right in the middle of the trail at the end of what is technically a closed road. I didn't preach to them, but did ask if I was supposed to hike right through the pop up, and if I could also raid the cooler on the way by. They were in good spirits and offered a drink, but we just passed with a chuckle.

All the ups and downs and canyons toward the end of this hike were wearing on all of us a little bit, but we pressed forward, determined to make it back to camp before Joe and crew reached it via the other half of the loop.

Laura cruised up behind us, and just kept going, leaving us in the dust. We made it back to camp and Larry shuttled me back to pick up my truck at Pinchot.
