Went to Spur Cross park for a short day hike to get some exercise. I find it difficult to hike a trail just to get exercise - need an incentive like exploring places I've never been before, looking for Indian Ruins, abandoned ranches, old plane wrecks, etc. At Spur Cross my favorite incentive is looking for Indian Ruins. Today I decided to explore the hills on the east of Cave Creek approximately 0.5 miles north of the park border in the Tonto Nat'l Forest. There is a trail that cuts through this area headed towards Skull Mesa which I've taken several times and always wondered if there were Indian Ruins on top of some of the hills along this trail.

After hiking only 1.5 miles on the trail I headed off trail across two draws and then up the hillside to the top of two hills looking over Cave Creek Canyon. The hilltops were typical of places where I've found Indian Ruins in the Cave Creek area - the right type and size of rock, good views of the canyon below and proximity to the creek. However I found no visible sign of ruins and no petroglyphs although there were many large black boulder faces to tempt a prehistoric artist. I was disappointed although the views from the hilltops still made the hike worthwhile. Then I started scanning the ground for pottery sherds - YES! I spotted sherds in two areas on the hill closest to Cave Creek. All were typical of the Cave Creek area with a rusty red colored outer surface and gray inner surface but one larger piece was gray on both inside and outside surfaces and had a corregated outer surface. It was odd that I found no ruins nearby and also no petroglyphs. Why would there be pottery sherds on top of this hill with no sign of any nearby ruins? Interesting to ponder. I spent the next half hour searching the hilltops for ruins and petroglyhs with no success then connected up with Cottonwood Trail #247 to head back to Cave Creek and the Spur Cross Trailhead.
