Back to Cave Creek Canyon for the second time in two days. This time I wanted to explore some hill tops and a flat area on the west side of Cave Creek just outside the Spur Cross park boundary on the north side. I try to limit my off trail explorations to the Tonto National Forest outside the park because park regulations discourage off trail hiking in the park. ;) On the way to the park boundary I saw a new trail on the east side of the Spur Cross trail and decided to check it out. It was a short 0.6 mile loop with some nice views and some of the best looking stag horn and cholla cactus I've seen inside the park boundary. On my way back to the car in the afternoon I would see a brand new sign had been put up calling this new trail the Fairy Duster Loop.

Once outside the park boundary I checked out the flat bench area on the west side as well as several hilltops which were linked together by ridges. All I found was one pottery sherd down on the flats but had a nice lunch and a nap on one of the hill tops. The type of rocks available for building materials in this area were too small and irregular in shape for durable wall construction.

I could see bigger rocks on some hilltops on the east side of the creek so I crossed over to that side after my nap to check them out. There I found two ruins, both single rooms. One had been built with rectangular rocks of just the right size to make durable walls that would have stood on their own even after the adobe mortar had been washed away by the weather. Unfortunately pot hunters had destroyed the ruin scattering the rocks. But, at least I had found some ruins to add to my list. It is rare that I don't find ruins or pottery sherds on a hike in Cave Creek. They are almost every where there is a level spot with adequate building materials near by.
