Around 3:00 in the afternoon, I received a call from Pam (Outdoor Lover) asking if I could meet her and Van (Vancar) at the Carney Spring Trailhead around 5:00. They were having route problems along the ridgeline and wouldn't have enough daylight to hike the Lost Goldmine Trail to their car parked at Hieroglyphic Trailhead. I wasn't doing anything important, so I agreed to be their shuttle.
I just took my camera along since I expected it to be a fairly short wait, parked the Explorer and hiked the trail to the Wilderness fenceline. Soon my cell phone rang again, and Pam told me that they were going to be later than expected due to finding the way up to 5057. I wandered around as the sun got lower, presenting me with some interesting shots of the Three Sisters rock formations and the desert scenery. All the while, I could hear voices coming from the direction of the Dacite Cliffs.
Before long, the sun was setting and the coyotes were sounding off so I trekked back towards the parking lot. Along the way, I caught some movement along the cliffs and saw hang gliders floating down. The lighting was too far gone and the distance too great so I was unable to get a shot of them, but it was quite a sight. They must have landed close to the Don's Camp.
Back at the parking lot, now dark, I spotted a figure walking down the trail heading my way. I asked him if he had seen a couple up on the ridge, and he said he had met them close to the 5057 peak and they were perhaps an hour behind him. Then I spotted the lights way up on the mountain coming down Carney.
The coyotes were howling again from back by the Quarter Circle U ranch site and the temp was dropping and I was still watching the lights slowly progressing down the mountain. It can be deceiving how close those lights can appear, but finally I could see them on the trail in front of me. Then finally two figures materialized out of the wilderness, Pam and Van had made it down and out (down and out is a good description of their condition too)
After a bit of chit-chat about the experience they had been through, I drove them to the Hieroglyphic parking lot where they kinda limped into Van's SUV and we parted. Glad everyone's OK after that one. I made it back home around 8:00, too late for dinner, so I just had a beer then called it a nite |
