The Superstitions got about 3/4 inch of rain last night so I thought I would hike into Hieroglyphic Canyon to see if water was moving between the pools. I also wanted to check the condition of the trails following the rain because I was going to hike from Peralta Trailhead to First Water Trailhead with Angela (Tibber), Ambika (Desertgirl) and John (Johnr1) on Saturday morning.

It was after 0900 (late for me) when I hit the trails as the sun busted through the clouds on occasion lighting up the mountains in a patchwork of light and shade with the clouds hanging low along the steep slopes. It was chilly yet so I was glad that I had overdressed and I could see only one set of foot prints along the trail ahead of me.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I got into the canyon, because the clouds were dark and low making it hard to tell what was up there. Once into the canyon, it was fascinating to look out towards Gold Canyon with the dark clouds and streaks of blue sky overhead.

The pools were full, and there was only a small trickle of water connecting them, so the mountain must have absorbed most of the rain. Small puddles of water dotted the surface of the canyon floor making footing a little slippery on the smooth rock surfaces.

It's a pleasure to be alone in this normally crowded and scenic canyon, so I made the best of it and shot photos that I knew would be absent of people and pets (don't know where the other hiker went). Then I left heading back down the trails. It wasn't long before I started meeting hikers on their way up to the canyon and the trail was now beginning to get muddy from the traffic. The mud caked into the tread on my hiking boots making it slippery on some of the rocky stretches. Wish I had brought another pair of shoes along because now my floor mats are all muddy :?

Once back home, the weather forecasters were predicting more rain for Friday night and into Saturday so I PM'ed the hiking group and recommended that we postpone the hike in favor of better hiking weather (all reluctantly agreed) :(
