| partners | | We arrived at the Barnhardt Trailhead at 7:45AM, and there was a pretty large group packing up their camp. We followed a gentleman down to Barnhardt Canyon Creek. It was flowing pretty good and with my crossing skills, I got my feet wet within the first 20 minutes of our hike. This would set me up for the day, feet staying dry wasn't really an option.
By reading triplogs I had pretty high expectations for catclaw on the Half Moon Trail, I wanted to be let down, but I wasn't! I have never seen a field of just catclaw! We had a little confusion connecting onto the Rock Creek Trail. Then the flat part was over and it was time to go UP.
On the Rock Creek Trail we ran into a canyoneer hiking down. Poor guy had gotten all the way up and realized he had forgotten his wetsuit. He seemed really bummed. I was excited to get to the section that Preston wrote was like the Grand View Trail. That section and through the Rock Creek crossings, was worth the hike up! After seeing the waterfall, I knew why that guy seemed so bummed about having to hike down.
The trails were pretty wet and sloshy and in some spots flowing water, pretty neat to trudge through.
We took an extended break at North Fork of Deadmans Creek. I wish I had been able to do Rock Creek a little faster to spend more time exploring this area.
Hiking the Divide Trail to Barnhardt, it seemed there was constant water flowing and waterfalls around every turn.
We reached the Barnhardt Trail intersection at 5:25PM. I had hopes of getting to the Big Kahuna waterfall before dark. There was a group camping just before the big waterfall, they seemed pretty cozy around the campfire. Nighttime won, and it was dark when we hit the big waterfall. I bet it is pretty impressive, because falls were flowing down right to the trail. |
