I love the unknown canyon, hill whatever. Unknown to me at least. And I like to have it to myself sometimes. This was all that, I call it upper Buehman but it may not be-- it may be one canyon or so over.
The day started really strangely. It was a cool night and near dawn I woke up but had my sleeping bag pulled over my head in the car because I was cold. I was thinking about coatis' from the previous day when I heard a noise, then like something was near the back of the Toyota. I lifted my head and saw a ringtail or a coati perched on my back tire!! It quickly jumped down, and I fuzzily pulled the sleeping bag back over my head. When I finally got going I looked at the dusty tire cover, and there were the little footprints.

I headed down the canyon. It was open and shallow at first, with nice benches to walk on, when there wasn't a ton of catclaw. The little stream flowed along. Around a couple of bends there was a small granite box, easily worked around with nice pools. Several interesting sidecanyons came in. A larger granite box came with bigger pools but still easy to pass. Later on the canyon became larger and deeper, suddenly broadening out with sandy banks, the water now coming and going. Pieces of an old road seemed to be in here, not driven for many years. I could see a road coming down a tall hillside in many switchbacks. I found where it went into the canyon bottom, it was washed out and showed no sign of traffic in a long time. With the canyon not as interesting and more open, I elected to turn around and go back, trying to follow the old road where I could find it. I saw some massive bear poop, I guess, it was so big I took a picture of it. Lots of traffic in this canyon, no people tracks, saw big and little cat, deer, javelina, porcupine. Maybe coati, need to get more familiar with their tracks.
So, maybe I was in upper Buehman and maybe I wasn't.
