| no partners | | I did this hike 6 years ago, also during the month of April, with my wife and kids. During that time, they were both in the baby carriers. This time they could hike the whole thing themselves, which is really nice as a parent. I had to go back and check my triplog for details. All I really remember is that my camera went on the fritz that day and I was left with 3 not very interesting pictures. Six years ago, we tried to get my daughter to walk a little of it since she was 3 and could hike, but she didn’t make it very far before needing to be carried, which made the hike harder for my wife.
Six years and four more able-bodied legs later, this hike was suddenly much easier. It was a much sunnier day than 6 years ago, so the pics were pretty nice. There were also a lot more flowers this time, which made for more nice pics. At the start there was an older couple who got on the trail just before we did and were soon on their way back down. They were CA tourists taking in all the desert spring scenery.
We got to the junction and had a snack and let everyone rest from the hike up hill. As we did last time, we hiked counter clockwise, getting the steeper climb out of the way early. It was nice to do that, but then it takes a little bit more out of the kids. At the junction my wife decided to start feeding the ants some Dorito crumbs to watch how they handled carrying them. That took up a full 20 minutes or so. I was kind of bored with that, but it was still semi-educational for the kids to see how ants behave in the wilderness.
After that was done, I suggested walking uphill just a bit further. We hiked up about another quarter mile and then headed back down the Pine Creek Trail. The creeks on both sides of the ridge had water. Pine Creek had more, but still not a whole lot. I saw a lot of green algae blooms, but at one spot I could see and hear water running off a rock into a small pool. As we got closer to the Beeline, the traffic got louder as usual and was punctuated by the AZ Bike Week crowd that was pretty much everywhere all weekend.
Once were all done, we did about 3.1 miles, which is about average for the kids these days. |
