Since we had to leave early in the morning, we opted for a night hike up. There is a trail register where the road is barricaded, but no other trail markings exist (name, number?), either on site, or on the FS website. Which is fine since the "hike" is not more than 300 yards. The old tower has been out of commission for some time, and the nearby building has only a couple of years left before it collapses completely.
The tower is pretty tall and offers good views but it has the smallest cab I've seen. Not more than 6- or 7-feet square. We got to see the moon set, and the red lights on Mormon Mtn were visible as well as the glow from Winslow, and a slight glow from Flagstaff, which is mostly obstructed by Mormon Mtn. A few cars or camp sites sparkled across the forest, and there were even a couple of flashes of lightning to the east, which surprised me.
This tower is one of my favorites. Easy to get to, great views, and very light visitation. |
