| partners | | My turn to draw up another one. Three of us had never done Bear Jaw / Abineau. I don't like driving to all the way to Flag for a 7 mile hike, so we decided to to the BJ/Ab loop from Lockett Meadow.
This would also incorporate the always purdy Aspen portion of the Inner Basin Trail and the Waterline trail, which none of us had been on before in this area.
We started at about 7:30 at a glorious 66 degrees and blue skies. Climbing up the The Inner Basin Trail trough the Aspens in the early morning light, was as nice as always.
We hit the Waterline Trail and part way up, we hit our high for the day at a comfortable 72.7 Degrees. I liked the Waterline Trail more that some in our group. When you catch a break in the trees, you are afforded some wonderful views.
Next down on the Bear Jaw Trail. Part way down the sprinkles started and the temps dropped to the upper 60's. We all don our rain gear. 45 minutes later lightning is crackling around us, we are all soaked (Except Wally in his Zip Lock). It's now in the 50's.
Up Abineau Trail. It's one steep mother. Rain/Hail/Lightning/Thunder off and on, as I watch the tops my shoes all the way up. I'd taken my glasses off because they became useless in the rain.
It's now 12 noon, 52 degrees and 10,400 up at the top of the trail. Soaking wet, freezing, we ultimately made the correct decision, cancel Plan "A", and follow Waterline trail back.
The Rain/Lightning/Thunder start up in full force again.
An hour later it's now the low for the day at 47 degrees. At this point, we have all lost the feeling in our fingers. Joe thinks his feet fell off somewhere. My shoe has been untied for awhile and I've tried to retie, but just could not get the fingers to work.
It was good get back to the truck and crank up the heat (A first for me in July?)
Joe must have had brain freeze also as the jokes did not start until we hit downtown Flag.
Denny sure is a good sport. Wally was brutal on him.
Almost comforting to see 112 on the truck Thermometer when we pulled into the Happy Valley Park and Ride |
