There's an old saying that one can't see the forest for the trees. Well on this hike we couldn't see Mt. Rainier for the trees. Mt. Rainier as many of you know can be seen pretty much anywhere in western Washington, unless of course you are right next to it.
Our son moved to Seattle last year and this time when we visited he said he wants to go check out Rainier. He found a great trail, Glacier Basin so it was a go.....but wait no dogs in National Parks. That means our grand daughter Bonny would have to stay in the apartment all day. So I find a trail right outside the park we can hike and then we can see Rainier from it.
Great idea. Except for the whole drive there Rainier was behind clouds, so we didn't know exactly where it was except somewhere on our right. The trail was pretty much straight up from the get go and we could hardly see sky let alone a huge mountain. After a couple of hours it became apparent we were not going to have a breath taking view of Rainier from this trail and it was getting late.
When we got back to the truck my son said "We're going in" almost mission like. I didn't drive this far not to see it. So we enter the park smuggling Bonny, stop at the pay kiosk....$15 a car....but we just want to see it and then leave...fine we'll pay. First credit card no good, second.... nope......Okie dokie then we'll drive till we see it, shoot pics and get out before getting busted. We'll put Mike's recently expired Discovery Pass and the day pass from Icicle Gorge in the window to prove we have paid at times.
I got my photo, then got the heck out of Dodge......yeah breakin the law.
The next day we chartered a U.S. Airways jet to personally fly us and hundred or so of our best friends past Mt. Rainier.
On this trip we now know why the Native people call this The Walking Mountain.
