A couple of times on our latest hikes my beloved suffered asthma attacks. I wanted to take her someplace very flat and an old road in case I needed to get the truck. We hadn't put many miles in lately so we were hoping today we could. We were "hiking" down the El Paso Gas Line road, as straight and flat as you could get. After about 2.5 miles as I found myself saying to myself....God shoot me now, this will go down as being one of the most boring mind numbing hikes.
I looked over at the Mrs. and she had a big smile and said ..Isn't this beautiful!
Sigh.
It was at this time as I looked west that I saw a wall. We went to inspect and found there were two sections. One a channel for driving large game at the head of Arrastre Creek and the other a very large corral. There was no doubt that this site was prehistoric, but at he same time how much was altered by historic Basque sheepherders?
I went south across Arrastre canyon to get a good overall photo. I looked down and then yelled across the canyon to my wife.....You've got to see this!
At least two dozen in situ metates...wow! The most we've seen in one place and some unique ones. There were very few petroglyphs here and I think most were archaic. The other interesting thing was there was no pottery at all.
So this site has been in use for many generations for gathering large game and my wife mused, feeding those hunters. This no doubt was a natural game route coming up from Black canyon.
The clouds had moved in, which is what we love up on the mesas, giving the landscape some dimension and cooling a bit. So it turned out to be a great day after all and I wasn't bored out of my mind.
The Mrs. was all smiles.
