one of warren's classic hikes, i've wanted to do this loop for years, even starting up abineau ten or twelve years ago but losing the trail at the avalanche chute
when angela and i hiked inner basin earlier this year, we put this one on the agenda, with angela suggesting doing it as a fall color hike
debated about which weekend, but with a mix of green, full color and past prime aspen status, the timing was good
met ambika at the trailhead and headed up abineau first
kathy and karl were hiking the loop from lockett meadow, and they made a great effort to catch up with us about a mile into the hike
fun to hook up and hike with them
met kathy and karl on peak 2429 a few weeks ago, but this was my first time hiking with them
the route they did was a good one
the top half mile or so on abineau is a little steep and rocky, but there is a clearly defined path on the west side of the chute
once you cross over the chute, you're at waterline trail
wandered further up waterline, which fades out into a small meadow
the intersection with waterline offers a nice lunch spot and great views
after a break, walked down waterline - a very pleasant old roadbed
several bends in the trail offered aspen tunnels, good color and a carpet of leaves underfoot
took our time and took lots of photos, all of us in tibber-mode
after crossing reese canyon and bear canyon drainages, we hit the bear jaw intersection and parted ways with kathy and karl
had to watch our footing for a few hundred yards due to leaves covering the rocks, but the trail smoothed out soon enough
could catch glimpses of aspen through the trees, and as we got lower passed several nice stands in full color
regrouped at the intersection with abineau
discussed driving over to lockett meadow, but realized we wouldn't have enough light for photos
after a beverage at the trailhead, headed back to flagstaff for nimarco's pizza and wings :)
great temps, clear blue skies and little wind
saw a good couple dozen others out enjoying the day
really liked this side of the peaks and would like to do the longer loop sometime
all of waterline, too
using angela's gps track as i was too lazy to bring mine
nice to see ambika again and hike with kathy and karl
thanks for driving and for dinner, angela
had a great time :)

Autumn Foliage Observation Substantial
mixed status of aspen color, from still green to no leaves at all
plenty of good color right now, lasting maybe another week
