| partners | | angela arranged this one as a "jack's back" hike
jack and angela set up a shuttle
kingsnake and i met them at first water trailhead
got going around 8:30
did some exploring and photo taking along the way
checked out some viewpoints, too
went up a little canyon cactuscat showed me, which still had a pool of water in it
jack took us off trail to look at some pottery shards
spent quite a bit of time at the indian paint mine as preston hadn't seen it before
admired the views of geronimo head, battleship, labarge canyon and weaver's needle from boulder canyon trail on the climb up
lots of little lookout points with the highest spot providing a nice view of boulder canyon
dropped down to the marina, where angela had beer/root beer for all of us - thanks!
sat outside and had lunch
watched the birds and ducks catch food scraps and fight with each other over them
saw three of the biggest carp i've ever seen
about halfway it occurred to me that i could hike back to first water
two criteria: one, that i felt good and two, that i could set out by 3:00
both were met, and after lunch said goodbye to the gang and started the ascent up boulder canyon trail
thought my lunch might sit a little heavy, but it wasn't bad at all
there is nothing like the view of the superstition landmarks when you hit that initial high point
the light was different in the afternoon, too
my least favorite part of this hike is the drop into labarge canyon, but it doesn't last long
back through labarge, over the little saddle, through boulder canyon and soon hit second water
don't mind the climb up from there, and used to not like the rocky part of the trail but i don't think it's so bad now - maybe from doing some off trail stuff?
an easy cruise through garden valley and back to first water
saw only three people on the return
two completely different hikes, and thoroughly enjoyed both parts
had cloud cover and a breeze much of the day, making temps pleasant enough
great to see jack again, and to meet and hike with preston
an excellent choice for the day, angela!
beautiful sunset on the drive out, with 360 degree color
look forward to spending some time out here over the next few months |
